The only man I can think of that could have pulled off playing Evita, would have been Freddie Mercury. He had the powerful voice with an enormous range, boatloads of charisma and liked to act and occasionally dress in drag. The only issue would have been getting past an Evita with lots of chest hair and a mustache. But I bet he could have killed "Buenos Aires", "I'd be surprisingly good for you", "Rainbow high" and "Don't cry for me Argentina".

I don't get why several here have suggested they could see a male playing Mame or Mama Rose. Why? One may as well go through the list and suggest the same : Dolly, Annie Oakley or Annie (orphan), or Ado Annie. In any case its equally ridiculous and becomes a drag show. As someone said earlier Cabaret's emcee could be either sex, just as Leading Player in Pippin went from Ben Vereen to Patina without a problem. But Evita please. Gender blind and color blind are worlds apart and are not equivocal.

A male Fosca??? Was Clara a male or female? If she was a female it adds a whole new dynamic to the show lol (straight turned gay). Now that I can believe :p. But seriously, I'm surprised to hear that things like this actually happen in real life. I'd see it all for the lulz.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
