Eight Oscar noms, all very well deserved. Would have liked to see cinematography, too, but, oh, well.

Hoping the success of the movie engenders other film adaptations of musicals.

Cinematography? The camera spent most of the time all up in people's faces..there was no cinematography!

Other than that the noms were pretty much what everyone predicted.

It's pretty safe to say Hathaway is the sure fire winner for the film. Jackman doesn't stand a chance.

The worst editing in recent memory is in Les Mis. Not sure if Anne is a shoe in anymore, Weaver and Field have a pretty good chance

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Here's Hugh's reaction. He's such a class act.

“I hadn’t planned to listen live to the announcements, but when I got into the car this morning to go to work, the driver had the nominations streaming as they were being broadcast. To be honest, it’s very exciting but all a bit surreal, and it hasn’t fully sunk in yet. This is a brilliant awards year that has been defined by an eclectic list of stories that have been told by incredibly talented and courageous filmmakers, and it’s an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as the other nominees in the Best Actor category. Having hosted the show, I have seen so many different sides of the Oscars, but to be an actual nominee is something I never would have dreamed possible.”

Yes, congradulations! I hope the movie does well at the Oscars. It seemed to go, for the most part, how people were predicting. I would have liked to have seen a few of the other actors, like Sam, get noms as well.

I also wished the cinematography had been nominated. I thought it was one of the big strengths of the movie and was a very bold choice. I kind of love that it was so polarizing, true art almost always is.

May I add my congratulations to the Les Miserables team for their Oscar nominations!

Specifically to Hugh and Anne...and also for Best Picture nomination honors ( thanks, Tom Hooper!)!!

At the very least, the work that had gone into making this movie and taking the risks attendant to a movie musical adaptation ( the genre itself is not always a popular movie genre and especially because it has such popular provenance - the book, the various film adaptations and the stage musical) are worth all the acclaim! It may be polarizing but to those who love it - it is something to be cherished again and again. Looking forward to the Blu-ray when its time on the big screen ends!

Coming from another part of the world ( the Philippines)... but having had a chance to see productions on Broadway, the West End, and even Paris ... and also here in a local staging ( courtesy of Cameron Mackintosh who gave special permission, which he said was a tribute to the Filipinos who made MISS SAIGON a success) - I am as excited as my countrymen about the release of the movie next week! There are some links here because our Lea Salonga and Joanna Ampil were part of this stage musical's legend! Btw, a local release of the soundtrack is due on the day of the release of the movie!

The timing of the Oscar nominations announcement bodes well for the success of the movie here!

Congratulations again -- and may they win on Oscar night!

They both did excellent. The cinematography was terrible though. Did you not witness the schizophrenic disaster that was One Day More.

Congrats!

There was only one shot where the cinematography bothered me...the one at the beginning of the scene with Valjean's Confession, where it looks like he and Marius are standing on the wall.

Kieran, are you sure you're not conflating the cinematography with the editing? (The latter was indeed problematic. The "Look Down" reprise comes to mind.)

Yay!! Very glad Hugh got a nod! Unfortunately with the surging popularity of Silver Linings Playbook and the Lincoln juggernaut, LM might end up empty handed. A lot of people are saying Sally Field very likely could take the BSA award, and Hugh will lose to either DDL or Bradley Cooper for SLP.

And add to the accolades: Golden Globes for Hugh, Anne and the movie! Yay!

"The cinematography was terrible though. Did you not witness the schizophrenic disaster that was One Day More."

Is that cinematography, or editing?

Yeah, I'd say editing - which I thought brought that scene extra strength - one of my favorite parts of the movie.
