The Chicago Tribune: Madonna's new album: Divorce, rage, regret - and you can dance to it, too!

The Toronto Sun: Madonna's new disc 'MDNA' GR8

San Diego Examiner: Madonna's 'MDNA' is as close to art as pop music gets

The Wild: MDNA Kicks like a drug and kills like a gun

USA Today: Madonna's 'MDNA' is rocking and revelatory

first of all i think its fair to say that most of In Bed With Madonna/Truth or Dare was staged for shock purposes and to be dramatic

Even if this were true (which it could be, but how does it differ from anything else we've seen of her behavior since?), it's just as gross since she deliberately wants to be portrayed that way. Whether she is a selfish egotistical bitch or wants everyone to think she's a selfish egotistical bitch, it's still ugly. Unless she were playing a fictional character would it be some sort of excuse. Six/Half Dozen.

Most celebs have their diva moments, she just does not hide it.

I don't like diva moments from anyone, but it's not a question of Madonna not hiding them. She advertises them like a badge of honor and her fans SWOON and celebrate her awesome bitchiness. The whole hydrangea thing was an excellent example of this.

Am I being harsh or am I being just being real and not hiding it? Worship me, bitch. I'll tell you how f*cking awesome I am. Then you'll love me, right?

Slant's review

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I love the well thought out contextual criticism in that review. Sure to be dismissed as coming from a "hata" in certain circles.

It's a well written, well thought out review. It seems the author also managed to "convince themselves" they enjoyed the album overall. So why would anyone hate on it?

Its a mixed to positive review, i dont think the critic 'convinced themselves' to like album, they just thought it had its strengths and flaws. Its hilarious that the same old people have picked a review that was MIXED to positive to talk about rather than talk about the many many rave reviews the album is having, especially when the comments are coming from people who insulted me for talking about reviews. However, please keep it coming, it's making me giggle and keeping me entertained.

I only have given it one listen, and then I'll wait for the CD, but I think Slant's review is the most accurate of the bunch. And really, they gave it 3 1/2 stars which for a POP album, from Slant, is pretty positive, so anyone who has issue with it is fighting an uphill battle.

Here's a 1992 Vanity Fair piece on Madonna. It's interesting to compare where she was in her life and career then with where she is now.

I just like that the Slant story understands it as an indisputable fact that Madonna "swallowed her light" when she married Guy Richie and stopped explicit connections to the gay male community that made her what she was to that day. I like that the contradictions in the Advocate interview are used to support that fact.

As I recall, this is a point I made when songanddance and I first went at it over his belief that Gaga's super-explicit courting and supporting of queer people, particularly youth, was insincere and only for her own benefit, but that somehow everything Madonna, the strong feminist queer-friendly icon did before she married Guy Ritchie 12 years ago, somehow counted for more. That's all.

I also appreciate the "Madonna's trying to defy death" theme brought up there. Of course, I have expressed my disappointment that rather than finding a way for a pop star of her ilk to mature, she has gone the other direction and is surgically trying to remain young looking. I guess I am just supremely disappointed that this inconolcast stopped forging her own path and went down such a familiar one. Perhaps this was just another aspect of her light that she swallowed and this article helps make contextual sense from an intellectual development point of view. Maybe Madonna really does have it deeply imprinted in her brain that life ends at 35.

This song isn't too bad, but what's with the pinched, colorless vocals? Madonna seems to forget that part of what made her best 80s dance songs so exciting (like the fabulous "Burning Up") is that she actually put some feeling and energy into the vocals. Even the flaws in her singing technique were kind of charming back then.

After a few hours on release the album has topped the charts in over 30 countries and many more look set to come. Great reviews, topping the charts and an amazing album. It's a good time to be a Madonna fan, now bring on the tour.

Madonna's new album is topping the charts upon release? Who would have thought it? It must be the best album yet. This is so different for her!

I'm really enjoying this album but I wouldn't say it's one of the best of her career. I've listened to it three times now and will continue to listen to it until I know the entire thing by heart (as I do with all her albums) so I'm sure it will grow on me more but as it is now, I really like it but don't understand peoples orgasms over it.

Careful Matt your bitch is showing. And actually Madonna has had a few albums that have not gone to number 1 around the world.

Jordan, i think it's her best album since Ray of Light, it does not beat Ray of Light but i have to say its very impressive. 2 songs on there will be instant Madonna classics Gang Bang and Love Spent, something i can not say about Hard Candy for example. I can see why people are going crazy for this album, i have not been this excited about a new album of her in a long time. Hard Candy was OK but it felt like it was not her, Confessions i love, music is pretty good, American Life not great. This one i love, though it does make me see how weak Give Me All Your Luvin is.

And I really love AMERICAN LIFE. I don't know why it's gotten such a bad rap (excluding Madonna's bad rapping in the title song lol).

Jordan i enjoyed many songs on American Life but it had some awful ones as well, and it kinda seemed a bit bland for the most part. And yes madge as a rapper.....never good.

I just don't think Madonna topping the charts on release is really news or indicative of anything other than she's still popular and has a lot of fans. I absolutely HATE American Life. It's the one album of hers that I felt had zero value. I thought Hard Candy and Music were okay and I like Confessions, but I have not obsessed over a Madonna album since I'm Breathless.

And the love for Gang Bang truly baffles me. I truly don't get what is supposed to be so appealing about it. I'd have to force myself to listen to American Life again to see if I could recall something she produced that was worse. Or maybe that song, I think it was Hard Candy, where she was telling us to f*ck off or whatever. Ugh.

Well the non love for Gang Bang is totally your opinion, however it's the song every critic and fan is pulling out as a fave. I adore it, the dirty bass, the sinister rhythm, the middle 8, the whole vibe of the song is superb.

I'm Breathless, great vocals, a few good songs, but largely forgettable, i can see why musical lovers could adore it though

The much maligned American Life is one of my favorite Madonna albums. And I do agree with Namo about that being the last album where she really tried anything new. I'm just more forgiving of her leaning on her dance roots because I like some of it. But I wonder what direction she would have gone if that album hadn't got such a harsh reception.

I've no doubt that Gang Bang will be a hit featured at 3 AM in bathhouses around the world, but I'm sort of regretting having ever heard it. I read that it is supposed to satirize Guy Ritchie's films, but it just sounds like she was stooping to his level.

Probably the biggest disappointment for me is Turn Up the Radio, which started out which so much promise, but never takes off. The melody starts off catchy and you think it's going to take flight, but it just sort of flat lines. Then she introduces these alternate melodies and shame on me for listening to Mika so much because I thought she was leading up to some awesome vocal layering and...it never happens. It's like she came up with one draft, shrugged, and said, "It's good enough". I was ready to be all impressed and have some fun, but ended up extremely frustrated.
