Eh, there is still nothing like live theater and being at the show. Can you really say that watching a live show on TV has the same excitement of actually being there? At least for me, I can't. Streaming will help attract a new audience and get more people who don't live NYC adjacent or near a major city with touring productions interested in musicals, which is great. As a teenager, i would have loved something like this available but it wouldn't deter me from going to shows myself. Also, it seems that if these shows merit attention and go viral through a streaming service that it may encourage investors to put capital out to get them on Broadway or off broadway. It may actually help to generate excitement for a show that may not have 'made it' on stage without the influence of social media, and may help to get more original musicals on stage.

When discussing art, its not about who DESERVES to see it. Containing any form of art behind a paywall is like holding water in a canvas bag, its gonna get out regardless of what you do. I've watched my fair share of bootlegs and am glad they exist. It's a grey area if there ever was one. By trying to make it black and white you're vastly oversimplifying the issue and its frankly coming off very shrill.

Yes, in the particular circumstance at Waitress that was an egregious overstepping and the person was right to be called out, especially in the front row. Even though we all know bootlegging is against the law, I'm going to wager a majority of people on this board has watched a bootleg at least once. I do think that increased streaming services, like BroadwayHD, will become a larger share of the theater revenue in years to come. Even living as close to NYC as I do I would still love the opportunity to get even more theater or rewatch old faves.

Folks from prior generations had the benefit of Broadway being in mainstream culture, and television shows like Sullivan were able to devote considerable chunks of their broadcast to 10, 20, 30 minute selections of Broadway performances. I'm fine with the circulation of those tapes- those would be bootlegs, too, since most have not been formally released, but are otherwise totally unavailable- since everyone involved was compensated for and had consented to those tapings (and, in many cases, those performers have passed away).

Theater is kind of different, though. When a movie, album, or anything else gets out, you are getting the same experience as the people who paid, especially since they are all digital now.

With bootlegs, you are getting a lesser experience. A forced perspective from a camera with audience audio that overwhelms the stage audio, stage lighting that often washes out the actors, and some person's head blocking the right corner of the screen (since the camera had to be lower to not be detected).

I think the larger concern isn't that it is leaking out, but that the quality of the live experience isn't being conveyed. A pro-shot can't capture all of what you get live, but even those are miles ahead of a bootleg. Just seems incongruous to consider a bootleg as a method of capturing art.

"Excuse me? Performances aren't "lost forever" without bootlegs. Please. People seeing the shows is ensuring performances aren't lost. Every time someone sees a show, that is burning the performance into their memory"

Sadly some people today are more concerned preserving the moment than actually enjoying the moment.
