Interesting article from a VFX artist who worked on the film and confirms the existence of the infamous 'butthole cut' as well as Tom Hooper's abusive behavior...

I finally watched  this week.  Everything that people have stated that was negative, didn't really bother me that much.  Even though I have seen Cats at least twice on stage, I didn't remember how boring the songs were. It was just dull.   It wasn't until the last third that the film picked up for me.  Up to that point, it was a chore to get through.  When the price of the dvd goes down to $10 or under, I'll buy it for my collection.  Although I wouldn't watch it again.

Then why buy it. Give the $10 to charity.

"

Are you unfamiliar with the concept of “collections”?

Buying something you don't want and don't intend to use is not collecting, it's hoarding.

Uhm, I buy all the Broadway shows that have been turned into films.  Whether I never watch it again or a 100 times is irrelevant.  What I do with MY money is my fukin business.  Mind your business.  There have been multiple things that you have posted about over the years that I could have made a negative comment about.  But I didn't.  I'm not that petty.

Well I've made it no secret that I think this film is very awful, but it's slowly becoming the musical film equivalent of the infamous 2003 film The Room where it's so god-awful that it turns around and becomes highly entertaining. This film does for the genre the same way that Paint Your Wagon did in 1969, a film so misconceived and so bad that you can't help but to be really entertained that it makes you curious as to learn about the behind the scenes madness of it all.

But thankfully this movie didn't damage the genre as some internet reviewers have feared (or secretly hoping for), so at this point I can relax and enjoy the madness of Cats 2019 and soon look to much better and superior musical film adaptations moving forward.

Cats could only dream of being compared to Paint Your Wagon. Yes, Paint Your Wagon is not a good film - and yet, it was the 7th highest grossing film of 1969, Lee Marvin had a #1 hit in the UK, and at least it had Harve Presnell singing They Call the Wind Maria.

Honestly if I had to pick which one I would sit through again, it would be Cats. Harve Presnell is incredible in his one song and all, but the movie as a whole is so boringly bad that I dozed off a few times when I watched it. Cats is so mystifyingly bad that it reminds me of those bad late 70's-early 80's movie musicals that you can't help but to wonder if someone was coked out of their minds when they were making it (The Apple being the best example of what I'm talking about).
