Although I have to say, some other overtures I really listen to, sometime more than the rest of the album

Almost anything by Bock and Harnick, especially She Loves Me, Tenderloin and The Rothschilds.

The Fantasticks is another favorite of mine.

I also like the overture to Song and Dance, its a little guilty pleasure.

And On The Twentieth Century is incredible, so well constructed.

It's definately Candide with the Fantasticks as second. I think I listen to the overture to Candide more than any of the other songs (except maybe Glitter And Be Gay, I love that song :) )

Speaking of bad overtures...Color Purple's was awful but, I love the play. Did anyone notice that?

Any of Bernstein and R&H musicals have very beautiful overtures that I can listen to over and over (e.g. Candide, WSS, Sound of Music, Carousel, Flower Drum, King and I, etc.). Candide and King and I top my list for my personal favorites.

*rushes to post in all*

I love the string intro to "Mama Who Bore Me," though I don't consider it much of an overture.

The Pirate Queen Overture was great, though the longer version was...a little too long.

Peter Pan has an amazing one. underrated, IMO.

i actually don't like gypsy's that much..

Candide is good.

I really like Wonderful Town, and basically all the big Bernstein shows (On The Town mainly).

I love Amour's overture. It's so...bubbly, and different.

And Light in the Piazza. Something about overtures with singing, I guess.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Wicked, Mary Poppins...mostly things I've seen, because they bring back fond memories. =] As for DRS, it just sounds so sinister.

I agree with much of what has already been written. Some that haven't been mentioned I also find invigorating:

The Rothschilds
Ben Franklin in Paris (better than most of the show!)
Applause
