"Mister Matt: Glad you mentioned THE WEIR. The production I saw was good but the play reads even better. "
I saw the original London production of The Weir, not knowing anything about it, but it was at the cheap ticket booth, and had won some awards, so... And was pretty blown away. As they often do with plays in London, the program contains the entire script, and it does read very well (though I thought the production still played a bit better in this case).
Some plays you shouldn't read before you see the production, in my opinion. Things like A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman etc. - it's only a matter of time before a production rolls around, so I prefer to wait. Others, like Orpheus Descending or Ressurection Blues, go ahead...but maybe that's just me.

I want to add to this list a section for short one-act plays. Works by playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre, or David Mamet could be excellent additions.
The collection mentioned above serves as an excellent starting point. "Oedipus" is simply one of those classic works that are worth reading to grasp the profound psychological and moral aspects of human nature. I recently came across some Oedipus essay on a website https://papersowl.com/examples/oedipus/ , and I was fascinated by this universe. After all, the play delves into the conflict between fate and free will, between the desire to avoid what is destined and what one is destined to become. This theme is intriguing to almost everyone.
