To drive the tourists and groups who haven't seen it that it's the last spring/summer/fall for them to see it, and to drive sales. Long-running shows can fall victim to the "I'll see it next year when I come back to New York" syndrome.

They could also possibly be trying to improve attendence so that if a theatre big enough becomes available they can transfer to it, showing theatre owners hey look we are still selling. Ford center has become a hot theatre for producers and maybe 42nd street contract expires then, and chitty looks to be going there. who knows i thought i would run a little longer then 2005, but who knows? we can only speculate.

I think 42nd Street will be running its course. I don't think the grosses are too high on this lately. It is a good show. But it was only revived before in the 80's. It needs a 20 year break from now on.
