Anybody know of a way to see the Tonys if I'm not in front of my TV on Sunday night and don't have a DVR?  Jun 11 2011, 01:18:28 PM
Aren't they showing it in Times Square?
Worst musical to win best musical?  Jun 11 2011, 01:17:40 PM
BIG RIVER was the worst IMO. I hated it so much I was tempted to move out of the country!
Does anyone else think Book of Mormon is overrated?  Jun 11 2011, 11:59:31 AM
I love you Pal Joey!*sigh*

The Tony committee meets soon. And, yes, you are right Curtainpulldowner...they could petition for featured. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Just to clear the air: Butz's name is above the title, so he we be in the Lead Actor category, if he gets nominated. Not featured.
re: FINIAN'S RAINBOW to move to Broadway in the fall...  Apr 3 2009, 01:32:32 AM
I loved the Encores production.

The show is about a lot more than racism, and the jokes about foreclosures, credit crisis and Wall Street really hit home to the audience.

Plus, the score is so well known??that could be the selling point.

It was a thrill to hear it again. And the cast was perfection.

It's all about this wonderful score weaving through a subtle and sometimes wild book!

Hence the title..there is ALWAYS music in that air...and the reprises are the airs...hehehe (if you listen closely, they make jokes of it...musically as well as in the book!)

I saw it last night and loved it! But I've always loved this score. It might not be for everyone, but I love the historical aspect of the show. It was very groundbreaking for its time (and in some ways even groundbreaking now!).

The use of underscoring had never been done quite like this before. It does start out "slow", but that is the point...to introduce the bucolic country atmosphere of these villagers before their trek to the big city and all the corruption that ensues.

No.

It was up there today...Monday.
re: New FCC rules could compromise use of wireless body mikes on Broadway  Nov 1 2008, 09:00:09 PM
Givesmevoice makes a great point.

The actors union require mics if there are any electronic instruments in the orchestra...which is EVERY orchestra these days. (Shows can't afford real strings anymore.)

Have a "spook"-tacular Birthday, Rob!!
re: Calling Broadway Performers by First Name  Oct 19 2008, 09:36:34 PM
If you notice, when newspaper critics refer to actors, they often write Mr., Miss, Mrs., Ms. Mr. Brantley of the NYTimes always refers to actors this way.

Actors in professional theaters used to be addressed as such by stage managers and other staff. I'm not quite sure if that tradition still holds true.

re: 13 Reviews  Oct 5 2008, 07:29:17 PM
Brantley was there Thursday, so I assume he's reviewing this one. Historically, he's NOT been a fan of JRB's work...

Sorry, Jake, I was referring to MrMusic and CatsNY posts RE: the "I got drunk" line; not your post!
re: '13' Revisions: From First Preview To Press Preview  Oct 5 2008, 07:09:50 PM
I agree, sadly, but I still don't think of it as "funny" or "entertaining" in a musical comedy.
re: '13' Revisions: From First Preview To Press Preview  Oct 5 2008, 06:33:58 PM
I, personally, was more offended with kids saying "i'm gonna get all up in her biddness!"

The whole show just made me uncomfortable.

Yeah, that was NOT a review...
re: West Side Story Officially Playing at Palace Theatre.  Sep 28 2008, 08:39:13 PM
Hahaha, Adam! That's why I put the word "hit" in quotes.

But I do now understand why they are closing Blonde so quickly..many of the same money people involved. Furman, Nederlander, Luftig, etc.

Might as well keep the Palace. WSS will, in this current economic climate, probably be much easier to get investors on board with a classic, then to invest in a new show--or continue to pump more cash into Blonde.
