Broadway books to read? Jul 20

On the Line: The Creation of A Chorus Line by Baayork Lee, James Kirkwood Jr, and Nicholas Dante
I'm a huge ACL fan, so maybe that's why I loved it so much, but it was really one of the most interesting books I've ever read.
Broadway Babylon by Boze Hadleigh is also pretty great. Very gossipy.

Cabaret: The majority of the first act is fun. Yes, it's seedy, dirty, kinda-wrong fun, but the audience is generally having a good time. And the Ernst takes off his coat. And then Kost outs Shultz for being Jewish. And then Ernst screams at Schneider and tries to leave. And you feel the party atmosphere crumbling. Company (06):
**The way Barbara Walsh makes her lines pop in the opening, especially "Bob we're having people next SATURDAY NIGHT", the whole line just soars but "saturday night" pops with her great belt.
**Basically everything Raul does, but I am obsessed with his "crazy Amy" in Someone is Waiting. It rings, I love it.
The Last 5 Years:
**I'm in the minority who's favourite song is Nobody Needs to Know. To me, it's perfect, and I have some memories with it, but that's beside the point. My favourite spots are 1)"hey kid, good morning, you look like an angel". I feel like Norbert is talking to me, it's so intimate and sincere, and I love this side of Jamie; and 2)from "conscious, deliberate mistakes" when strings do the really high slide...UGH. 3)"Aliri-i-ight, I get what I need" the powerful riff into the breakdown, seriously, perfect. Ok, this song is full of these moments, and I could go one forever, but seriously, why does this song make me fall in love with Jamie more? He's being a schmuck!
**In A Miracle Would Happen, the whole "gesticulating with my left hand and that WHUP there's Cathy..." section is so well done by Norbert.
Lippa's Wild Party:
**Make Me Happy is full of them, (the whole show is full of them), but the trio on "In my hands" is everything, plus BDJ's "WHAAATTT?!" it gut wrenching and the way the organ grinder/circus music comes in at the end, especially when BDJ sings "how many girls could love a clown?" UGH my heart!
**Idina does some of her fiercest belting in this show. Her small bits in Let Me Drown slay me (and Life of the Party is my favourite Idina piece).
**What Is It About Her? is perfect. The way Julia weaves in and out is so beautiful and heartbreaking, but BDJ SLAYS this piece. "now comes another man pretending he can win her heart, well let him start! What is it about her?!?!" is perfection.
I'm gonna stop with this show, but I could really go on all day.
Sunday In The Park With George:
**We Do Not Belong Together: "No one is me, George, no one is MEE" and "tell me what you feel" til "which I thought you were a part of!" break me heart. This is one of the most gut wrenching pieces in musical theatre, for me, as I feel super connected to Dot but you see so much of George's pain too. These people need each other but can't give the other what they need at the same time, and this song is everything.
**Finishing the Hat: I am obsessed with this song. And Mandy's performance of it. The way he FEELS the music and puts everything he has into the soaring melody of "And when the woman that you wanted goes" section. Absolute perfection. It's best when you can see him, as he gets his whole body into the movement of the melody, this performance is so definitive.
Cabaret (9 :
**I Don't Care Much. This is the most beautiful song in the show, and since I recently closed the show as Sally I have a super guttural reaction to it (the sound of it sends me to tears because of where it is in the show, I associate it with crying and despair, but that's the actor in me). Alan Cumming is perfection on the recording, the way he manipulates his voice to fill the simple melody is beautiful. "go or staaAAAAYYYYY" near the beginning, the harsh "toooouuuuuuCCCCHHH" first time through, the anguished first "warning's fair", the growl and the second time through of "I don't care much", and the tortured ending give the song so much life and depth and hurt. And now I'm crying because of the song and how much I miss performing this perfect show.
That's it for now, but I'm kind of obsessed with this thread and (clearly) have a lot of little favourite moments, so there's probably more to come.

I saw the show when it was in Toronto and was highly unimpressed. I considered leaving at intermission (something I NEVER do) but the tickets were a birthday gift and I still wanted to see what this team pulled together, so I stuck it out.
I'm not going to give a full review, because it would just be echos of previous comments, but I have a few things to add.

Just a comment on the age of Sally, in Goodbye to Berlin (the novel Cabaret is based on), Sally Bowles is 19 but looks 25 because of the way life has treated her already. Yes, the musical alters the story and character quite a bit, but I think the actress playing Sally should be in her 20s. An older Sally isn't as sympathetic, at least to me; if she looks 40, you just want to tell her to grow up, which I understand is the point of the character, I just find that there is a line where that stops

I saw JCS when it was in Stratford, and in my opinion it really is fantastic. I'm not a huge fan of the show itself (I prefer a musical to have actual dialogue scenes, but to each their own), but I thoroughly enjoyed this production. The second act in particular is very well done, and I found the final moments of the show to be breathtaking. The cast is excellent, strong voices all around (though I saw Carver as Pilate, so I can't speak on that role). The main trio carry the show nicely, Paul No

That's interesting, artscallion, I'd never heard that before. That does make sense and clears up a bit of the issue with the Baker, so I can definitely believe that.
I am going to be obnoxious though and stick to my guns not with the specific age, but with the idea of her being younger than the "adults" and older than the "kids", around mid-late teens, to me, seems right.

It did strike me as odd watching it yesterday, and I'll admit I only made the age connection with the Baker yesterday (and I've been in the show...oops).
I do like the idea of Rapunzel being younger. Not as young as Red definitely, maybe around the same age as Jack? A little older? I think she needs to not be a CHILD but still childlike ("stay a child while you can be a child") and younger than Cinderella, who has quite a bit of maturity at the beginning and continues to mature through

I think a lot of people forget how young Rapunzel is supposed to be. In the second act, when Rapunzel's already gone pretty crazy, the Witch asks her what's wrong and she says:
"Oh, nothing! You just locked me in a tower without company for fourteen years, then you blinded my Prince and banished me to a desert where I had little to eat, and again no company,and then bore twins! Because of the way you treated me, I'll never, never be happy!"

I saw this show the last week of August and adored it. As a dancer, I particularly loved the female ensemble, the choreography was fantastic. All the leads were on the top of their game, and I was lucky enough to see Alex Ellis as Brenda, and I hope that this leads to big things for her. I'm very sad to see this show go, it was a truly fun, entertaining theatrical experience.

Saw the show last Thursday (the 25th) with Tari Kelly and Kelly Bishop, and I adored them both. Tari knocked it out of the park, this woman needs to be a star, someone give her that star vehicle somewhere, she's like Sutton with spark and more charisma. She was just so on it, amazing.

littlegreen2, as much as I disagree with most of your opinions, I have to thank you for calling out Emma Hunton's performance. Next to Normal is in Toronto right now, and everyone I know who's gone is saying she stole the show, when I found her to have moments that were great, but overall she was VERY overdone. Too much angst, too weepy...I lost the realness of the character.

From what I've seen live, Alice Ripley in Next to Normal takes the cake, with Bernadette Peters in A Little Night Music coming in a close second.
Now, if I had been fortunate enough to see Raul Esparza in Company live, I'm sure that he would be my number one, because from my many viewings of the dvd, he's already up there.

I am so glad I got to see this video, but I'm still going to say that I prefer Raul Esparza's rendition (which I had the privelege of seeing live just this last weekend, it still is in my mind). John Raitt's voice is spectacular, and I agree that one would be hard-pressed to find a voice to match in caliber among today's crop of leading men, however it's the acting that it comes down to for me, and Raul just brings so much to the song acting wise in addition to vocally.

Another vote for Walsh. While I've only seen LuPone and Walsh (neither live, unfortunately, Walsh on the DVD, LuPone in the screening), I chose Walsh because she was with it the whole show, every time I looked at her, she was Joanne. Her voice suited the role perfectly, in both her big solos and just her lines in full cast numbers. Yes, LuPone's "Ladies Who Lunch" was very good, I felt that she was just waiting for her big moment during everything up until that point.

I really wanted to go (as a participant), but I'm going to New York in August (so I can see Follies), and we couldn't swing it to go twice in one summer(I'm from Toronto, so it's a bit of a hike). I saw Raul in the "Very, Very Best of Broadway" concert last night in Toronto, and it made me even more upset I wasn't going.

It would have been interesting to see Elizabeth Stanley in the role, she and Raul had such great chemistry in Company, but I don't know enough about this show to make a judgement on if she's right for the role.
