Encore Theatre and Gallery (The Encore) proudly launches its 2025–2026 season with the inspiring stage play Akeelah and the Bee by Cheryl L. West, produced in special arrangement with Plays for New Audiences. Presented at the historic Carver Theatre in partnership with the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, this groundbreaking collaboration signals a bold new era of cultural unity, innovation, and community engagement for Birmingham. Based on the beloved film, Akeelah and the Bee follows Akeelah Anderson, an 11-year-old from a tough Chicago neighborhood who discovers a gift for spelling. With help from a devoted mentor and her community, she overcomes self-doubt and personal challenges to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It’s a heartfelt story of resilience, courage, and the transformative power of words — themes that resonate deeply in today’s Birmingham. Why This Production Matters • A Groundbreaking Collaboration – For the first time, Encore Theatre and Gallery joins forces with the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and Carver Theatre to bring innovative new works to this historic stage. • Encore’s Next Chapter – As Encore aggressively works toward completing its own downtown space, this collaboration ensures Birmingham continues to enjoy world-class theatre even as Encore builds for the future. • Community Impact – Like Akeelah, whose neighborhood rallies around her dream, this production reflects how Birmingham must rally around its artists to sustain and amplify our city’s cultural voice. “This is more than a play — it’s a milestone,” said Marc Raby, Artistic Director of Encore Theatre and Gallery. “Akeelah and the Bee is about resilience, brilliance, and believing in yourself — exactly the kind of story our city needs. Every ticket purchased is not just a seat — it’s a vote for live theatre, for local artists, and for the power of stories to unite Birmingham.” Event Details WHEN: October 2–4, 2025 WHERE: Carver Theatre for the Performing Arts, 1631 4th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Perfect for families, schools, and audiences ages 9–99 TICKETS: Available at www.encorebham.org About Encore Theatre and Gallery Encore Theatre and Gallery is Birmingham’s only Black-led theatre company dedicated to producing contemporary and new works that amplify diverse voices.
