New Show Added for Del Shores at Terrific New Theatre
Texas-born writer, director, producer and actor Del Shores will once again bring his own brand of Southern humor to town when his new one-man show takes the stage at Terrific New Theatre. A special performance has been added on May 17 at 8PM. After the performance, the TNT audience will be treated to a meet-and-greet with the star.
Tickets are $25 each and must be purchased in advance (via cash, check or credit card) by calling (205) 328-0868 or emailing tam@terrificnewtheatre.com, or by visiting https://sixcharactersbrimingham2.brownpapertickets.com/ (online service fees apply).
Written by Shores, Six Characters in Search of a Play introduces audiences to half a dozen characters inspired by Shores' real-life encounters that haven't quite made it into one of his plays, films or TV shows. The playwright was inspired by Luigi Pirandello's classic 1921 play, Six Characters in Search of an Author. Shores' production is directed by longtime collaborator Emerson Collins, who is also an accomplished actor and producer.
In 90 minutes, TNT's audience will hear the truth behind how Shores - the creative force behind such cult classics as Sordid Lives and Southern Baptist Sissies - collected these eccentric characters, as the deft actor portrays them in his trademark monologue style. There is "Yvonne," the vegetarian-hating Texas waitress; "Sarah," an elderly actress who is determined to drink and smoke herself to death if Trump is elected; "Jimmy Ray," the evolving Georgia redneck; "Loraine," the once-brilliant drama teacher who has lost her mind and is now obsessed with porn; "Aunt Bobbie Sue," the blue-collar Republican who does not care for "the others"; and "Marsha," the monkey-hating lesbian with COPD.
As summed up by the Dallas Voice, "Six Characters in Search of a Play is both specific and universal in its quest to help us understand humanity, from family to fandom, with compassion and heart, all wrapped up in a quilt of homespun hilarity."
