There’s no place like home. September Song Musical Theatre will be back in Westminster this summer to present The Wizard of Oz at Winters Mill High School. The performances will be at 8:00 p.m. on August 17, 18, 24 and 25 with a 2:30 matinee on August 19. The matinee will feature sign language interpretation provided by students from the CCBC Interpreter Preparation program.
This classic tale by L. Frank Baum debuted 73 years ago on the silver screen and remains a crowd favorite to this day. Audiences of every age can enjoy the story of Dorothy and her dog Toto as they are caught by a tornado and end up in the merry old land of Oz. There they are welcomed by munchkins, thwarted by a wicked witch, and meet new friends on their journey along the yellow brick road.
Founded by music educators in 1973, September Song returns to its original home in Westminster. The group called Eldersburg home for 6 years and then “went dark” with no show in 2011 due to the rising costs of producing musical theatre. “I feel in my heart that September Song is now home”, says Joan Eichhorn, the group’s producer. “We are back now and financially stable due to the support and generosity of the people of Carroll County”. The show is funded in part by a Community Arts Development Grant from the Carroll County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council. Supplemental funding will be provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
Tickets are on sale online (www.september-song.org) and at the Carroll Arts Center on Main Street in Westminster. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door with discounts for students and groups. Proceeds from the show will be donated to Winters Mill High School’s performing arts departments.
