Olney Theatre Center Opens LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, 8/1

By:

Olney Theatre Center has announced the opening of the musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Little Shop of Horrors will run on the Olney Theatre Center's Mainstage from August 1 to August 26, 2012.

Little Shop of Horrors, composed by Alan Menken and written by Howard Ashman, is about a hapless florist shop worker, Seymour, who finds and raises a mysterious plant that brings the florist attention from everyone, including his crush. In an attempt to keep all eyes on him, Seymour gives in to the plant's appetite for human flesh and blood. Soon the plant, Audrey II, grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, carnivore and Seymour has more than he bargained for. The musical is based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman.

Olney Theatre Center's production of Little of Shop Horrors will be directed by Mark Waldrop. Waldrop plans to direct this production comparable to the original off-Broadway production and would like to invoke the full range of ecstatic emotional highs and depths of real horror that this production is capable of creating.

"It's my hope to strip away some of the reputation Little of Shop Horrors has acquired over the years as a campy spoof, or a silly kiddie show," said Waldrop. "People who think they know this show will not only get the laughs they expect, but may also be surprised at its depth and insight into human nature."

"Little Shop of Horrors is cool frothy summer fun."-The New York Times.

Tickets for Little Shop of Horrors start at $26; please contact the Olney Theatre Center Box Office at (301) 924-3400 to make reservations.
