Baltimore Shakespeare Festival Announces 2007-08 Season

Baltimore Shakespeare Festival announces its 2007-08 Season beginning in July with Macbeth, outdoors at the Evergreen House Meadow, followed by Bertolt Brecht's version of Antigone, translated by Judith Malina, in October indoors at St. Mary's Outreach Center.  In February the Teen Performance Program will present The Comedy of Errors, and the professional season closes with The Winter's Tale in April. 

"This season is a season of defiance", says BSF Artistic Director James Kinstle. "This is a classical season looking at bloody contemporary issues."

• The season starts with BSF Resident Director Tony Tsendeas making his Evergreen directing debut with the Scottish Tragedy, Macbeth, appearing in the Evergreen Meadow with new curtain time of 7:30PM. This mystical tragedy is a Shakespearean thriller rife with treachery. The show opens Friday, July 6th and runs through July 22nd.  Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sundays at 5 pm. Grounds open two hours prior for picnicking.  Evergreen Meadow is located at 4545 N. Charles and parking is free. 

 

• After last season's daring production of Desdemona, A Play About a Handkerchief, Raine Bode returns to direct the Brecht / Malina version of the Greek Tragedy, Antigone, a challenging moral battle over rights to bury the military dead. This show is on BSF's Elizabethan Stage at St. Mary's Outreach Center in Hampden opens October 19th and runs through November 11th. Student matinee performances are October 24th, 25th and November 1st, 7th, and 8th at 10am. Evening performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 5pm.   

 

• The professional season concludes in the spring with Kathleen Akerley making her Baltimore Shakespeare Festival directing debut. Ms. Akerley has acted in three previous BSF productions and now returns to direct Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. A two-time Helen Hayes Award Nominee and Artistic Director of Longacre Lea Productions in Washington, DC, Ms. Akerley presents this exploration of the redemptive powers of time and honesty.  The Winter's Tale opens at St. Mary's Outreach Center Friday, April 4th, and runs through April 27th.  Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 5pm.  Student matinee performances are April 9th, 10th, 17th, 23rd and 24th at 10am.

 

• In February, BSF has added the Teen Performance Production of The Comedy of Errors. Teens from the Baltimore metropolitan area audition for this high-spirited production.  This unique program provides the opportunity for some of Baltimore's most skilled professional directors and designers to mentor the next generation of classical actors. Performances run February 15th through 24th, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 5pm.
