Baltimore Playwrights Festival Opens COUNTDOWN TO THE HAPPY DAY Tonight

By:

The Baltimore Playwrights Festival continues its Thirty-Second Season with tonight's August 9th opening of Countdown to the Happy Day, by Thomas W. Stephens, produced by Heralds of Hope Theater in Residence at Sojourner-Douglass College (www.heraldsofhopetheater.com), 410-997-5779.

Co-directed by Percy Thomas and Margaret Locklear, performances will run through September 1, 2013, taking place Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 4:00 p.m., at Sojourner Douglas College Theater, 200 N. Central Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21202.

Tickets are $10, and may be purchased at the door, or in advance by calling 410-997-5779. Convenient parking is located at the rear of the building on Asquith Street off of Orleans with easy access to the theater.

When Cervin, a 15 year old troubled youth, meets Gertie, a homeless Army veteran, they both get more than they bargained for. Faith, hope, despair and anger play their part as an unexpected friendship develops. For mature audiences.
A former Shubert Playwriting Fellow, Thomas W. Stephens has written dozens of plays, long and short. His plays have been produced or developed at numerous venues, including the National Playwrights Conference of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center; Berkeley Stage Company; Source Theatre Company (first original play to be staged); Pittsburgh New Play Festival; University of Virginia; D.C.'s Capital Fringe Festival; Dallas Theater Center; American Conservatory Theatre; Audrey Skirball Kennis Theatre; Barter Theatre's Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights; the John F. Kennedy Center's Page to Stage Festival; Ashland New Plays Festival; and North American Actors Association's Playreading Festival (London). Honors include Actors Contemporary Ensemble Playwriting Award; Wheaton College Playwriting Competition Award; Doorway Arts Ensemble Playwriting Award; and the Charles M. Getchell New Play Award of the Southeastern Theatre Conference. Tom is a member of The Dramatists Guild.

The Baltimore Playwrights Festival has presented 273 scripts by 165 playwrights, produced by 25 different companies, over the past 30 years. Our mission is to provide an environment that nurtures the talents of Maryland and DC playwrights through public readings, discussions, critiques and workshopping of their new plays. Our summer season is devoted to the presentation of these newly developed works in cooperation with local area theaters and production companies.
