Ally Commissions Playwright Doug Robinson For Mapping Racism Project

Ally Theatre Company has announced Doug Robinson as the commissioned playwright for its 2019 Mapping Racism Project, produced in partnership with the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation and Joe's Movement Emporium.
Doug Robinson is a theatre artist based in the DC Metro Area. He received his BFA from Long Island University in 2015. In 2015 his play Tree Fort premiered at the New York Emerging Artists Festival at the TADA theatre. In 2017 he was the recipient of the inaugural Imagination Stage Rebecca Rice Community Engagement Grant. Currently he is a teaching artist with Imagination Stage and Adventure Theatre.
Mapping Racism is a collaborative project that will bring public awareness to the effects of land and property use restrictions known as "restricted deed covenants" that were commonplace in the 1920s and 30s and used as tools for racial segregation. Though no longer legal, some of these covenants remain on lease agreements today.
With research provided by the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation, Mr. Robinson will script at 30-45 minute play examining the effects of restricted deed covenants and how they played a role in the shared history of Hyattsville and surrounding communities. The play will receive a staged reading in January 2019 and a full production will take place in May 2019 at both Joe's Movement Emporium and a yet to be determined location in Hyattsville.
