Castle Clinton Presents 'They Came To America' 4/17
April 6, 2010

When most people think of immigrants coming to New York, they think of Ellis Island. But before there was Ellis Island, there was Castle Garden (the site of Castle Clinton National Monument), which opened as an immigrant Landing Depot in 1855. More than 8 million immigrants passed through the Battery's Castle Garden between 1855 and 1890. To celebrate this important part of its history, Castle Clinton is taking part in New York City's annual Immigrant Heritage Week. To this end, the National Park Service is offering two special programs on April 17.

Dreyfus Jazz Presents European Modernists Series, Jean-Michel PILC Tour Dates
April 6, 2010

Jazz, once a singularly American invention and one of the United States' greatest exports, has become a truly international phenomenon, with important players from all over the world making valuable contributions to the music's evolution. Europe, previously home to many of the most devoted connoisseurs of the art form, is now also the producer of some of the most innovative voices in jazz. With the inauguration of its European Modernists series Dreyfus Jazz is proud to bring U.S. audiences some of the best creative music being made on the continent today. The first releases in the collection showcase musicians from Belgium, France and Italy, spotlighting two long respected veterans and a pair of important younger voices. Taken together, Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine, French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc and Italians, drummer Aldo Romano and saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, these artists represent the continuing trend of noteworthy original music emanating from European environs.

AMNH Presents 'Race To The End of The Earth' 5/29-1/2/11
April 6, 2010

Race to the End of the Earth will recount one of the most stirring tales of Antarctic exploration: the contest to reach the South Pole in 1911-1912. The exhibition will focus on the challenges that the two competing explorers-Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Britain's Royal Navy Captain Robert Falcon Scott-had to face as they undertook their 1,800-mile journeys from the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf to the Pole and back. As they grappled with the complex logistics of the expedition-preparing equipment, securing nutrition, and estimating human endurance in the face of Antarctica's extreme conditions-each team made crucial decisions that led to both triumph and tragedy. The exhibition also explores the legacy of these early expeditions by linking it with modern science in the Antarctic and the latest research on this unique continent.
