The Edinburgh City Council have approved plans to close George Street, Edinburgh, for David Bates' Famous Spiegeltent and an al fresco festival area promoted jointly with Tommy Sheppard's Assembly Rooms, according to Brian Ferguson of the Scotsman.

A season of high drama and razor-sharp comedy takes to the stage this autumn as Sheffield Theatres unveils its new season from September 2012 - January 2013. The season opens with Sheffield Theatres' Artistic Director Daniel Evans directing a new production of Shakespeare's Macbeth, followed by the regional premiere of Penelope Skinner's The Village Bike and a major revival of Shelagh Delaney's seminal work, A Taste of Honey. Other highlights include the world premiere of DC Moore's latest play Straight, and a major revival of the classic musical My Fair Lady at Christmas.

Tickets go on sale today, Friday 18 May, for award-winning children's author Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful which plays for a strictly limited 16 performances only at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 18 - 29 September 2012. Directed and adapted for the stage by Simon Reade, Private Peaceful has designs by Bill Talbot and sound by Jason Barnes. Casting will be announced shortly. The National Theatre's One Man, Two Guvnors will continue its run at the Haymarket from 1 October after this two-week break.

Grant Mudge has been named the Ryan Producing Artistic Director of the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival. Mudge succeeds Jay Paul Skelton who departs after the conclusion of 2012 season of the Festival to pursue a research degree in England. Peter Holland, Associate Dean for the Arts in the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame, recently made the announcement. "We chose Grant after an extensive national search. His success in building the Richmond Shakespeare Festival shows that he has the track-record and the talent to help us take the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival forward to an ever more exciting future," Holland explained.

Chicago Dramatists will present the final production of their 2011 - 2012 Season, I Am Going to Change the World by Resident Playwright Andrew Hinderaker and directed by Jonathan Berry from May 24 - July 1 at Chicago Dramatists, 1105 West Chicago Ave. Opening nights are Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 at 8 p.m. Previews are May 24 - 26 and May 31 at 8 p.m. Regular performance times (June 3 - July 1) are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
