WE BUILT THIS CITY Interactive Theatre Experince Set for Mothers' Day Weekend, Scottsdale

By:

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts has invited kids and their families to take part in a free interactive performance of Polyglot Theatre's We Built This City on Mother's Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 12–13. Two 120-minute performances will take place outdoors in Scottsdale Civic Center Park on each day at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Admission is free and tickets are not required. Refreshments from Shine Coffee and picnic foods are available for purchase.

An internationally renowned creator of interactive experiences for children and families, Australia's Polyglot Theatre inspires kids to turn the simplest things into extraordinary creations. Ideal for youngsters 12 and under, We Built This City is a giant public construction site that uses thousands of cardboard boxes and the energy and ingenuity of kids and families to build a magnificent imagined city in one day.

A DJ puts music to the action as participants are guided by performers in the roles of construction workers and hilarious characters who facilitate free play and set tasks that bring people together to build in unity. Buildings go up, are pulled down, redesigned, extended, walked through and reconstructed, while participants make tunnels, archways, towers and labyrinths. At the end of the day, everyone joins in trampling down the city into a gloriously chaotic heap of cardboard rubble.

We Built This City has been performed in four languages in 10 countries, including seasons at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.; London's Royal National Theatre; and the Sydney Opera House; and tours of Scotland, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and New Zealand.

Polyglot Theatre's We Built This City is presented as part of Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts' 2011–12 Discovery Series exploring the arts of Australia and New Zealand and is made possible in part by a grant from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.
