With the figure of the sorceress Alcina, whose story is told in the sixth and seventh song of Ludovico Ariosto's epic poem Orlando Furioso, Handel joins a long chain of Alcina musical settings, which started in 1625 in Florence. 1735 very successfully listed on London's Covent Garden for the first time, Alcina is one of the most popular and most frequently performed operas of George Frideric Handel.
Ruggiero, the sorceress Alcina fall in love, has her account terminated his military career and left his fiancée Bradamante. Alcina's island is his refuge. However, it is his fiancee who loves him and wants to win, and Melisso who needs him to win the impending war can, on the track. Both also come in Alcina's love labyrinth and the trials and tribulations take their course. Handel shows himself in this magical opera at the height of his creative power, in all stages of longing and hope, of flirting and devotion, of pain and injury, the lie and the fear of rebellion and despair are traversed.
