Austin Theatre Project, coming off of its most successful season yet is about to launch its fifth season with the brand-new musical First Date. In fact, it’s just the first of three Central Texas Premieres scheduled for the 2016 season.
When blind date newbie Aaron (Scott Garrett Graham; Carrie: the musical, Forever Plaid, The Rocky Horror Show) is set up with serial-dater Casey (Marett Hanes; Avenue Q), a casual drink at a busy New York restaurant turns into a hilarious high-stakes dinner. As the date unfolds in real time, the couple quickly finds that they are not alone on this unpredictable evening. In a delightful and unexpected twist, Casey and Aaron’s inner critics take on a life of their own when other restaurant patrons transform into supportive best friends, manipulative exes and protective parents, who sing and dance them through ice-breakers, appetizers and potential conversational land mines.
The other restaurant patrons are Daniel Cline (Carrie: the musical, Forever Plaid, The Rocky Horror Show), Rebecca Smootz (Bending Broadway 2, 3, & 4) and Austin Theatre Project Newcomers Kate Sullivan Gibbens, Craig D. McKerley, and James Springer. The set for First Date is designed by Jim Schuler, costumes designed by Veronica Prior, lighting by James Jennings, and sound by Mark Schroth.
