The Giver by Lois Lowry is set in a carefully controlled society where everything appears orderly and peaceful.
The story follows a young boy named Jonas as he approaches an important milestone that will determine his future role in the community. When he is given a highly unusual and respected assignment, he begins to experience life in a way no one else around him does.
