BWW Reviews: SECRET GARDEN at St. Edwards University is Haunting and Beautiful
by Jeff Davis - June 17, 2013
The last few times I've seen a production at St. Edwards University's Mary Moody Northern Theatre, I've had to remind myself that I'm viewing a show featuring a cast of mostly college students. Every time, the production is of professional quality, and their current production of The Secret Garden is no exception. All audience members are bound to be mesmerized by the physical beauty of the stagecraft and the incredible performances.
BWW Reviews: Acting Soars as Writing Falls in NEXT FALL
by Jeff Davis - June 16, 2013
The reasoning behind staging a Tony Nominee for Best Play is quite easy to understand. Plays that have either been nominated for or won a Tony are easily marketable to the public. Still there is that occasional Tony nominated play that is a complete head scratcher, a play so poorly written it's baffling that it made it to Broadway in the first place, let alone snag a nomination for Best Play. Case in point: the poorly written and conceived Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts. While the Austin premiere of the play, currently staged by The Paradox Players, features some incredible performances, the incredible work of the cast still can't cover up the vast shortcomings of the text.

Paradox Players Present NEXT FALL, Now thru 6/30
by BWW News Desk - June 14, 2013
NEXT FALL takes a witty and provocative look at faith, commitment and unconditional love. Luke is a Christian. Adam is anything but. The play follows the ups and downs of this unlikely couple's relationship with sharp humor and unflinching honesty but also forces us to examine what it means to 'believe' and what it might cost us not to.

Sometimes there's nothing as hysterical as hysteria. That's the main premise of Reefer Madness, currently produced by Doctuh Mistuh Productions, a musical satire about the dangers of marijuana. The show, which splits its run between the Spiderhouse Ballroom and the Dougherty Arts Center, is an absolute laugh riot.

BWW Reviews: Creators of The 50 Shades Parody Deserve a SPANKing
by Jeff Davis - June 07, 2013
It doesn't get much more disappointing than Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody, an incredibly misguided spoof of the equally misguided novel Fifty Shades of Grey, where every joke is predictable, expected, bland, and punctuated by ferocious dry-humping.

BWW Reviews: QUALITIES OF STARLIGHT Offers an Honest Look at Drug Abuse
by Jeff Davis - June 04, 2013
We all have secrets. We all have ways of coping with disappointment or pain. Some of those coping methods do more harm than good. None of these ideas are necessarily original, and they've all been dramatized before. However, the story of an elderly couple who secretly copes by using crystal meth is an unexpected one that has yet to be told. That's one of many reasons that makes Qualities of Starlight, the new play by Gabriel Jason Dean now playing at Vortex Rep, such a riveting and effective drama.
