Jim, an Atlanta streetcar driver struggling to make ends meet during the Atlanta Transit Strike of 1950, goes to great lengths to buy a Christmas gift for his wife Della, unaware that Della is going to similar lengths to afford a gift for him. When Della makes a new friend, the holiday season takes an unexpected turn and the ultimate sacrifice is made to have a beautiful Christmas.
