Past Meets Present in Upcoming Emory Visual Arts Department Exhibition TILDEN AND THE THEBAN HERO by Andrew Scott Ross, 10/4-12/14

By:

Emory University's Visual Arts Department presents "Tilden and the Theban Hero, AnDrew Scott Ross," October 4 - December 14, 2013.

The exhibition will be presented at the Visual Arts Gallery on Emory's campus and is free, no ticket required, thanks to the support of the Friends of the Visual Arts. There will be an opening reception on Friday, October 4, 5:30 - 8 p.m.

Artist AnDrew Scott Ross will present new work, drawing inspiration directly from the Permanent Collection of Emory's Michael C. Carlos Museum, which holds the largest collection of ancient art in the Southeast. Ross explores the manner in which the museum setting reimagines and reconstructs the past by creating his own visual gateway to the ancient world through paper-dioramas, drawings and sculpture.

The exhibition takes its name from an artifact in the Carlos Museum's collection, a Greek calyx-krater depicting the Greek goddess Artemis turning the Theban hero Aktaion into a stag-"Tilden and the Theban Hero" combines threads of Greek mythology with the artist's own familial history to form more intimate relationships with both. These constructions are a part of a personalized encyclopedic museum Ross continues to develop as part of his interest in history museums serving as vehicles for storytelling.

On Wednesday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m., Ross will discuss the exhibition in an artist's talk to be held in the Michael C. Carlos Museum Reception Hall. This event is free, no ticket required.

Hours for the Visual Arts Gallery are Monday - Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, 12-4 p.m., and by appointment. Visit visualarts.emory.edu for details.
