Out of Box Theatre to Present THE LAST FIVE YEARS

By:

Out of Box Theatre opens their 2016-2017 season with the acclaimed musical The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown. Named one of Time Magazine's 10 best shows of 2001, The Last Five Years has retained its popularity, with an Off-Broadway revival in 2013 and a film adaptation released in 2014. Veterans of the Out of Box stage, Lauren Rosenzweig and Stephen DeVillers star as Cathy and Jamie in this emotionally powerful and intimate musical.

The show's unconventional structure bends time around the duo, chronicling their relationship from two perspectives at once. Over the course of five years, the two New Yorkers fall in and out of love. While Jamie tells his story chronologically, time for Cathy moves in reverse. They meet in the middle, at their wedding. Out of Box Theatre is proud to support Melissa Simmons in her professional directorial debut, in conjunction with Music Director Annie Cook.

"I was reminded of how much I love this work last week when I noticed a Facebook memory from a couple of years ago where I posted, "If I could make a living just playing The Last Five Years, I would," Cook said. This will be Cook's third iteration of The Last Five Years, and the first at Out of Box. Likewise, lead actress Lauren Rosenzweig has portrayed Cathy before, and their passion and love for the show shines through in this production.

Under direction of Annie Cook, DeVillers and Rosenzweig are accompanied by live piano, violin, and cello. "The music itself can tell its own story," said lead actor Stephen DeVillers. This will be his first time portraying Don, but a return to the Out of Box stage. Previously he and Rosenzweig appeared onstage together in Out of Box's production of another romantic musical, Company.

With innovative staging, extraordinary passion, and the intimate setting of the Out of Box Theatre, this production of The Last Five Years is sure to be unforgettable, and it's just the first in a brand new season for the theatre. Award-winning playwright and director Topher Payne will direct the subsequent play, Keith Bunin's The Credeaux Canvas, a tale of art and lies in money-mad Manhattan, and Zip Rampy will direct the exciting cult-classic Halloween event Evil Dead: The Musical, for which early bird tickets are already selling for both general admission and the wicked onstage "splatter zone."

The Last Five Years will run July 8-23, 2016 with Thursday, Friday, and Saturday shows at 8:00 PM and Sunday matinees at 3:00 PM. Out of Box Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit professional theatre located just outside the perimeter in the Artisan Resource Center at 585 Cobb Parkway S, Marietta, GA 30060. Regular season tickets are $17-$25 and can be purchased online at www.outofboxtheatre.com or by calling the box office at 678-653-4605.
