Georgia Shakespeare will present Illyria: a Twelfth Night Musical, on stage June 6 - August 5 at the Conant Performing Arts Center on the campus of Oglethorpe University. The show features music and lyrics by John R. Briggs, the creator of 2010's Shrew: the Musical.

Often referred to as Shakespeare's most musical play, Twelfth Night "gets the royal treatment in this adaptation directed by Briggs featuring an eclectic mix of musical styles, including rock and roll, country, gospel, and Andrew Lloyd Webber-esque American theater classics.

"The visually stunning set by J. David Blatt will remind audiences of Disney's Aladdin, creating an exotic world full of color and whimsy, complimented by Patricia M. Wesp's lush costumes.

"For those who might not be Shakespeare buffs, this show offers a great introduction to the true genius of the Bard's stories. When twin brother and sister Sebastian and Viola shipwreck on the shores of Illyria, they become separated. Viola, played by Georgia Shakespeare Associate Artist Courtney Patterson, must masquerade as a boy named Cesario to gain employ with the Duke Orsino, played by Associate Artist Joe Knezevich. Viola quickly falls in love with the Duke, despite the fact that he sends her to woo his love Olivia as his messenger.

"Viola's assumed identity sets off a hilarious comedy of errors, perfectly accompanied by musical numbers that reflect the tone of each scene and the emotions of each character.

"Anna Kimmell makes her Georgia Shakespeare debut as Olivia, and Atlanta favorite Chris Kayser will delight audiences as Olivia's drunken uncle Sir Toby Belch.

"Audiences are encouraged to bring a picnic and bottle of wine to enjoy Georgia Shakespeare's outdoor terrace before heading into the theatre for a raucous, rocking good time."

Patrons can also stay after the show on June 15 for A Cross Dresser Cabaret, a special performance by members of the summer company at which men will sing songs usually sung by women, and women will sing songs usually sung by men! For just $10, guests can enjoy the beautiful summer night as the veranda transforms into the hottest nightclub in town.

Regular performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m. Cabaret Night is June 15.
