Atlanta Symphony to Feature Oliver Knussen and More This November

Two weeks of concerts in November will feature Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians as soloists. Guest Conductor Oliver Knussen will return to Atlanta Symphony Hall to lead Concertmaster David Coucheron, Principal Cello Christopher Rex, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Brahms' Double Concerto in A minor on November 10 and 12 at 8:00 p.m., and November 13, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. Mr. Knussen will also lead the Orchestra in the Atlanta Symphony premiere of his own composition, Symphony in One Movement. The concert will also include the Atlanta Symphony premiere of the Overture to Britten's The Building of the House and The Young Person?fs Guide to the Orchestra.

The following week, Guest Conductor Ilan Volkov will lead Principal Flute Christina Smith and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1 on November 17 and 19, 2011, at 8:00 p.m., in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. The program will also include the Atlanta Symphony premieres of Ruggles?fs Angels and Seeger's Adagio for Strings, as well as Sibelius?fs Symphony No. 2.

OLIVER KNUSSEN Symphony In One Movement
Oliver Knussen's Symphony in One Movement is a revision of an early work, his Concerto for Orchestra (1969), commissioned for the 1969 Florida International Music Festival at Daytona Beach, Florida?.

BRITTEN The Young Person?fs Guide to the Orchestra

Ruth Crawford Seeger, born Ruth Crawford in East Liverpool, Ohio, on July 3, 1901, studied music in Jacksonville, Florida, Chicago and finally, New York.

SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2
In the fall of 1900, Jean Sibelius and his family departed their native Finland for Italy, stopping first in Berlin. 

These concerts are part of the Delta Classical Series and the November 10/12/13 concert is sponsored by Porsche Cars North America and Jim Ellis Porsche.

Single tickets for these performances are $21 to $79. All single tickets for the 2011.2012 season are on sale now, and available online at atlantasymphony.org, or by calling (404) 733-5000. Tickets may also be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, all ticketmaster outlets, and the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office, located in the Woodruff Arts Center at 15th and Peachtree Streets. Box office hours are Monday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
