Rehearsals may not start until January, but Bette Midler is already hard at work preparing for her return to Broadway. 'I'm excited, I'm unnerved, I'm utterly game. I love the character, I know the score, I'm learning the dances,' the icon told NBC Today on Sunday morning. Featuring a politically-charged version of High School Theatre Show and a cold open revolving around Donald Trump's tweeting habits, the episode remained focused on the current political climate, while beginning a pivot toward the holiday season with a 'Cleaning Lady Christmas Show' sketch, and a music video about a re-gifted, peach scented Christmas candle. Thommie Retter (Billy Elliot) and Retter Entertainment ring in the holidays for the HOW MANY consecutive year with This Way To Broadway Live: Jingle Jam!, an original musical/song and dance showcase for audiences of all ages on Sunday, December 4 at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre, 10 West 64th Street. The show brings together talented kid performers from the stage and screen-many of whom have already appeared on Broadway and on tour-and others who are Broadway bound. The script was penned by mother/daughter writing team Sheryl Berk and Carrie Berk (Peace, Love & Cupcakes: The Musical; Fashion Academy: The Musical) with original songs by Thommie Retter and Rick Hip-Flores (In Transit; Fun Home; Billy Elliot). #EduHam is a series of HAMILTON Wednesday matinees made available to New York City schools with a high concentration of students from low-income families for the ticket price of only $10. This educational partnership, made possible through a $1.46 million grant by The Rockefeller Foundation, is not only providing 20,000 NYC public school students with the opportunity to see HAMILTON on Broadway, but provides educational material by Gilder Lehrman to incorporate material from the musical into the American History curriculum. While FUN HOME and HAMILTON have certainly not been the only high-quality new musicals to hit Broadway in the past two seasons, they've both displayed the kind of originality and relevance in subject matter, expertise in writing and imagination in execution that works wonders in elevating public awareness of the dramatic potential of the art form and smashing the lingering bias that says singing and dancing diffuses the impact of serious theatre.
