The New Season, a series of concerts at Birdland featuring top Broadway performers and composers, begins on Monday, April 4th at 7pm with Tom Wopat.
Perhaps best known as "Luke Duke" from his seven seasons on the TV show, "The Dukes of Hazard," Wopat is currently in the cast of the upcoming Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross. He received a Tony nomination for his role as Frank Butler opposite Bernadette Peters in Annie Get Your Gun, portrayed Billy Flynn in the Broadway revival of Chicago, and starred as Julian Marsh in the 42nd Street revival. Wopat has also released several albums with CBS and Capitol Records. His new CD, "Dissertation on the State of Bliss," delivers jazzy interpretations of Harold Arlen songs including "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," "Come Rain Or Come Shine," and "Accentuate The Positive." Many of these, along with theater songs and other standards, will be included in the Birdland set. There is a $30 cover and $10 food/drink minimum.
The New Season at Birdland is presented by Jim Caruso, in association with TheaterMania.com, and will also include Maureen McGovern in a gala benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (April 11 at 9pm), actor/songwriter Jeff Daniels (April 19 at 9pm & 11pm), composer Laurence O'Keefe (April 25 at 7pm), composer Victoria Shaw (May 16 at 7pm), Stephanie d'Abruzzo (May 23 at 7pm), Toxic Audio (May 30 at 7pm), Malcolm Gets in a benefit for The Songbook Project (June 13 at 7pm), Max von Essen (July 18 at 7pm) and Christine Ebersole & Billy Stritch (July 25 at 7pm).
BIRDLAND has been a world-class music room on the Manhattan nightclub scene since 1949. Jazz superstars Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dinah Washington, and more recently Ann Hampton Callaway, Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli and Tito Puente have all performed on the BIRDLAND stage. The room offers top-flight music in a world class setting, good sight lines and acoustics, and a menu featuring award-winning Southern cuisine. Most recently, it's become the home of Jim Caruso's Cast Party, the weekly Monday late night showbiz gathering featuring impromptu performances by the Broadway, jazz and nightclub crème de la crème.
