Join The Segal Center for a conversation with Schaubühne Berlin's influential artistic director Thomas Ostermeier-one of the world's most thrilling and recognized German theatre-makers of today. With Marvin Carlson and Frank Hentschker on Thursday, October 12 at 2:00pm.

Ostermeier began his theatrical career in 1990 acting in Einar Schleef's Faust project at Berlin University of the Arts. He studied directing at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin and became the assistant of Manfred Karge. After staging the Russian symbolist Alexander Blok at the Ernst Busch Academy, Ostermeier was asked in 1996 to take over the Barracke of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin as the Artistic Director.

Early on in his career Ostermeier rebelled against "decoration" and celebrity culture within theatre - embracing the "intimate and violent" psychological realism prevalent among young British playwrights like Sarah Kane and Mark Ravenhill, whose plays he directed next to the works of young emerging German dramatists, such as Marius von Mayenburg.

Since 1999, at the age of only thirty-two, he has become the Artistic Director of Schaubühne Berlin and since 2005, he has also been Professor for Directing at the Ernst Busch Academy. He is best known for his acclaimed and worldwide touring productions like Hedda Gabler, Hamlet, An Enemy of the People, and RICHARD III. His productions won numerous awards and in 2011 he became the youngest ever recipient of the Golden Lion for his life's work at the Venice Biennale. In July, he presented the world premiere of Returning to Reims, an urgent reflection on the new world order starring Nina Hoss, adapted from Didier Eribon's memoirs.
