On Thursday, March 31 at 7 pm, the Brooklyn Museum will host a conversation with writer and historian Ian Buruma and photographer Stephen Shore. Together they will discuss Shore's participation in the exhibition This Place, in which he explores the complexity of Israel and the West Bank through landscape, portraits, and street photography, as well as iconic pictures of the American West and his work around the globe. The conversation is free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis at the Admissions Desk starting at 6 pm.

This Place explores the complexity of Israel and the West Bank, as place and metaphor, through the eyes of twelve internationally acclaimed photographers. Between 2009 and 2012, the twelve artists spent extended periods in Israel and the West Bank, free to approach their subjects as they chose. They travelled throughout the region and engaged with a remarkable variety of individuals and communities. Shore has described Israel and the West Bank as "impossible to comprehend" because of the extreme heterogeneity of the land, its history, and its population. He responded to this challenge with his own heterogeneous approach with a range of techniques, and a traversal of photographic genres. This Placeincludes 14 of Shore's color images made on an 8x10 inch camera.
