THE LARAMIE PROJECT And THE LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 YEARS LATER To Be Presented By Universal Spirit Center
The documentary plays examine the impact of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard and the community response in Laramie.
Universal Spirit Center will present THE LARAMIE PROJECT and THE LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 YEARS LATER in repertory, with performances scheduled April 24–26 and May 1–3 in San Diego.
The documentary plays examine the impact of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard and the community response in Laramie. While The Laramie Project captures a town grappling with tragedy in real time, its sequel revisits the community a decade later, exploring what has changed and what remains unresolved.
Reverend Kevin Bucy, spiritual leader of Universal Spirit Center, will also appear in the production, performing multiple roles across both plays. “During these challenging times for our nation, it's imperative that we stand for the inclusion of all people,” Bucy said. “By performing these plays, we are moving this powerful message beyond our walls and into the greater San Diego community.”
Directed by Julian Diaz, the production continues the Center’s engagement with documentary theatre following a previous staging of The Laramie Project, which received recognition from local community leaders and the City of San Diego.
“This production is especially meaningful because of the venue,” Diaz said. “A San Diego spiritual center is willing to grapple with the legacy of Matthew Shepard and the consequences of bigotry and hate.”
