Tomorrow, Thursday April 25, the Strand Bookstore (826 Broadway) will present an in-store discussion with playwright Douglas Carter Beane and director Jack O'Brien, of the Lincoln Center Theater production of THE NANCE, currently playing on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre. The event will be in the store's 5th floor loft from 7:00 - 8:00 pm, and will be moderated by the Strand's Director of Events, Jessica Strand.

Guests must buy a $15 Strand Gift Card in order to attend this event. Gift Cards can be purchased in store or online at www.strandbooks.com. Please note that payment is required for all online event orders at the time of checkout.

A nance, according to Webster's Dictionary, is "an effeminate or homosexual man." In the world of 1930's burlesque, a nance was a wildly popular character, a stereotypically camp homosexual man, usually played by a straight performer. In THE NANCE, playwright Douglas Carter Beane tells the story of Chauncey Miles (Nathan Lane), a headline nance performer in New York burlesque, who also happens to be homosexual. Integrating burlesque sketches into his drama, Beane paints the portrait of a homosexual man living and working in the secretive and dangerous gay world of 1930's New York whose outrageous antics on the burlesque stage stand in marked contrast to his messy offstage life.

Today, the Strand carries over 2.5 million used, new and rare books, covering topics as far-ranging as occult to philosophy to finance. The store also offers an ever-changing array of literary gifts, and goods from Moleskines to coffee mugs, and everything in-between. The Strand's in-store events feature some of today's most interesting and provocative personalities from James Franco to Patti Smith to dialogues between such greats as Junot Diaz and Hilton Als to Robert Caro and Frank Rich. These events offer a relaxed, intimate evening where guests are both engaged and entertained.

THE NANCE, playing on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre (145 West 45th Street), is performed Tuesday evenings at 7pm, Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8pm, with matinees Wednesday and Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 3pm.
