Happily Ever After Productions will be bringing "Spring Awakening" to Het Amsterdams Theaterhuis this June. In 1890s Germany, schooling aims to teach only a sense of clockwork conformity suitable for the industrial revolution. Repeating the same dry verses is mandatory and the wisdom of the past is unquestionable. For Moritz, his rebellious friend Melchior is his lifeline to navigating his confusing dreams of sex and identity. Meanwhile Wendla naively experiments on her own desires with Melchior, unable to get the simple facts of reproduction from her mother. When Moritz fails an exam, the full force of Victorian values irrevocably changes their lives and only some can learn from their parents' mistakes.
Shows will run June 12-14 and June 18-21, 2026 and will feature a double cast. Tickets and cast information can be found on HEAP's official website. On Friday 19th of June, the matinee will be followed by a Q&A session with the cast and crew.
Originally debuting in 2006, Spring Awakening won 8 Tonys for its atmospheric direction and deeply moving score that portrayed the indescribable feelings of adolescent rage at a system that not only obscures the truths of life but also punishes you for trying to understand. HEAP aims to add a sense of hope in spite of these adversities by fostering an intimate community in their team so that their humour and vulnerability can shine with help from a more stripped back set.
This production is recommended for audiences aged 14 and older. The story contains depictions of sex, abusive families, grooming, suicide, teen pregnancy, and uses mature language. While we endeavor to handle these with the utmost care, there are scenes that may be uncomfortable or overwhelming for some and viewer discretion is advised. The show will be performed in English.
