Rumble Theatre Presents TREMORS

Rumble Theatre is thrilled to present Tremors, our festival of emerging talent. This year's festival features a young company of 38 emerging theatre artists who will direct, design, stage manage, tech, produce, and perform in three hot contemporary Canadian plays: Selfie by Christine Quintana, Tiny Replicas by Dave Deveau, and Theory by Norman Yeung. From August 16 to 25, these three plays will be performed in different rooms of the Italian Cultural Centre. Come see one show, make it a double bill, or take in all three-and admission to all shows is Pay-What-You-Decide! You, the audience members, get to pick what to see and how much to pay-the choice is yours. And, of course, our Tremors festival lounge-complete with on-site bar-will be open every session for our audience members and artists to enjoy.

"Tremors is the culmination of our mentorship program and it's always a super fun project for us to produce," says Rumble Artistic Director Stephen Drover when asked about the festival, which will be his final one with the company. "As well as showcasing the talents of local emerging actors, directors, designers, and stage managers, Tremors will share three fantastic new Canadian stories by remarkable homegrown writers. In fact, this is the first time that all the scripts for Tremors are from British Columbian playwrights."

There will be additional opportunities to engage with the playwrights and their work through the festival's free Playwrights Speaker Series and Talkbacks. Quintana, Deveau, and Yeung will join us on August 22 for a special Speaker Series session to share their insights into what it's like to be a playwright working in today's cultural environment. The playwrights will also participate in a solo Speaker Series session following a select performance of their play: Quintana will chat about Selfie after the August 18 performance, Deveau will speak following Tiny Replicas on August 23, and Yeung will be on-hand to talk Theory after the August 22 evening performance of his show. Given the challenging subject matter tackled in the play, there will also be further opportunities for audience members to engage with Selfie at one of the post-show talkbacks (August 21, 23 & 24).

But what happens when an incident shatters the connections between three friends? Teenage relationships are complicated enough - especially when you add the reckless power of social media. This smart and intense play delves bravely into the nature of sexual consent.

Simon and Ethan want to have a baby...but they can't do it without the help of Dayna and Audrey. The challenges of a gay couple trying to have a baby come to life in this comedic and heartfelt look at how we find out who we are through our relationship to procreation and our relationships with each other.

Isabelle, a young tenure-track professor, tests the limits of free speech by encouraging her students to contribute to an un-moderated discussion group. When an anonymous student posts offensive comments and videos, Isabelle must decide whether to intervene or to let the social experiment play out. Soon, the posts turn abusive and threatening, leading Isabelle and her unknown tormentor to engage in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse that not only has Isabelle questioning her beliefs, but fearing for her life.
