"Dorian Gray: The Musical," has its rock musical premiere as part of the second annual New York Musical Theatre Festival, September 15-18 in midtown Manhattan.
Barry Gordon presents the new show, produced by BroadwayUSA! based on Oscar Wilde's classic novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray," with book, music and lyrics by Barry Gordon and Andrew Steven Ross. Performances are at The Barrow Group Theatre, 312 W. 36th Street.
According to Barry Gordon, "In the present day of aging rock stars still touring and presenting the same shows and performing the same stage posturings of their youth, "Dorian Gray" is especially poignant, addressing the lure of eternal youth, the battle between good and evil, and the cost of fame."
In its previous form, Gordon and Ross' "Dorian Gray: The Musical" won the 2003 National Music Theater Network's Directors Choice Award. NMTN is the parent organization of NYMF. As an official Special Event of NYMF, "Dorian Gray" was chosen among 36 other submissions to be presented this year.
The DCA winners each receive a cash grant of $2,000 and are invited to participate in NMTN's new BroadwayUSA! Program of regional musical theatre festivals.
Gordon won a Tony nomination when he was 13-years-old for "A Thousand Clowns," and has never lost his love for the Broadway stage, and now he's back in New York. Performance schedule at The Barrow Group Theatre is Sept. 15. 8 p.m., Sept. 16, 1 p.m. & 5 p.m., Sept. 17, 1 p.m., Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
