Fertile Ground will present new work by various artists and Take Root will present an evening of work by Proteo Media + Performance and Meghan Frederick/Practice Project.
TAKE ROOT, now in its 8th season, aids in the continued development and performance of new dance work of various aesthetics by providing choreographers with the opportunity to be produced in a full-length or paired evening of work. This once a month series supports dance makers by providing our venue, Green Space, with full technical and marketing support.

About the Work Proteo Media + Performance: In Orbicular, Breeanah Breeden and Kathleen Kelley investigate how their actual differences in generations (early twenties and mid-thirties), in race (black and white), in economic power (freelance dancer and choreographer/professor), and in dance training (hip-hop/ballet and release technique) work together to produce visual and creative tension. These differences are evoked, navigated, and subverted to challenge conventional hierarchical patterns. Orbicular instead develops multilayered relationships between the performers themselves and between the performers and the audience's expectations of identity and power. It features aggressively physical dancing and emotional gestural exchange, and is supported by an original music score and film projections designed by the performers. Orbicular was created during a 2016 LIEMAY fellowship.

Meghan Frederick/Practice Project: SOFT BLUE conjures a space where the fragile lines between truth and fantasy are blurred and broken. With each moment counted and accounted for, three women practice performances of togetherness, mis-remember choreographies, and re/present images of femininity. Dancing through SOFT BLUE reveals the construction and collapse of physical and psychological realities, illuminating cracks through which possibilities for magic emerge. SOFT BLUE is performed by Meghan Frederick, Carlye Eckert, and Elisa Davis and features an original score by Trevor Wilson.
Company/ Choreographer Biographies
Proteo Media + Performance creates unique intermedia performance experiences using film, projections, and live dancers. Headed by Artistic Director Kathleen Kelley and a team of collaborators across art forms including composers, visual artists, poets, lighting designer, and filmmakers, Proteo specializes in lush visual and textural landscapes and engagingly detailed physicality. Its artistic works explore the intersections between improvisation, technology, feminism and the body, often integrating the logic of dance performance into fields such as film, interactive technology, poetry, sculpture, and software design in addition to live performance.
Kathleen Kelley is a choreographer, media artist, and Assistant Professor of Dance at Montclair State University. She is a 2015-2016 LEIMAY Fellow at CAVE Organization and her choreography has been shown across the US including at the Dance Complex in Boston, the Center for Performance Research, the Tank NYC, the John Ryan Theater, Triskelion Arts Center, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Chez Bushwick, and Dance New Amsterdam. Her most recent dance work, "Unstable Artifacts" premiered in March as part of the CURRENT SESSIONS, Volume VI, Issue I performance series and was featured as part of the Nimbus OFFLINE choreography series, the HATCH performance series, and WAXworks performance series. She received her BFA from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and her MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Meghan Frederick/Practice Project is an arts platform dedicated to the creation and performance of original dance works and the stewardship of supportive spaces for artistic exploration. It is led by Meghan Frederick, a performer, choreographer and dance educator based in Brooklyn, NY. Her choreography has been shown in New York City at Triskelion Arts, Dixon Place, The Wild Project, Dance New Amsterdam, Green Space, Open Performance through Movement Research, and STUFFED at the Judson Church, and at Bates Dance Festival, Rutgers University, Denmark Arts Center (ME) and Barn Arts Collective (ME). Meghan has recently performed with Liz Lerman, Denman Theater and Dance Company, Kendra Portier, Maya Orchin, Catherine Galasso, Carlye Eckert, Laura Peterson Choreography, Jules Bakshi, Marielis Garcia, and Brian Brooks Moving Company ('08-'14). Meghan appears in a dance film with choreography by Haylee Nichele directed by Derrick Belcher and with music by Tim Fain, and in a music video for Esmé Patterson choreographed by Carlye Eckert and directed by David Nuewirth. Meghan has taught in the dance departments of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts with Brian Brooks Moving Company and Bowdoin College with Laura Peterson Choreography, as well as at Rutgers University as adjunct faculty, and as a guest artist at Hunter College, Bates College, Dance New Amsterdam, Gibney Dance Center, Moving Target Portland, and 100 Grand. Meghan attended Hampshire College where she designed her own major combining dance and cultural studies and teaches Pilates in New York City.
FERTILE GROUND is a monthly new works showcase for emerging and established artists now in its 11th season, producing the work of over 50 choreographers each year. This non-curated performance event features five or six choreographers each evening and includes a post-performance discussion with wine, moderated by Green Space's Artistic Director, Valerie Green.

The Dancing Georgina Project
Dance Entropy Inc. created its company home base, Green Space, in Long Island City, in November 2005. Green Space is a spacious 2000 sq. foot venue housed in a former silk factory with magnificent views overlooking Manhattan. Green Space offers choreographers, dancers and the local community an affordable professional dance rehearsal, class, and performance space in New York City.
