New Rock Musical EMPTY CITY Holds Industry Reading, 6/13

By: May. 31, 2014
Kay Trinidad, Jason Gotay, and Jeigh Madjus lead an industry reading of a new rock musical titled Empty City to be presented on June 13, 2014 at 1:30 pm at The Davenport Theatre in Manhattan.

Empty City follows the characters of Bophana and Ly as they return from university to learn their parents have arranged them to be married. As they try to choose between tradition and aspiration, their country falls to the occupation of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Families are torn apart, citizens are enslaved and the hope of an agrarian-based society quickly ignites a Cambodian genocide. Set to a contemporary rock score, the pair and their lifelong friend, Bou fight for the legacy of their country and the hope of their future.

Kay Trinidad (The Little Mermaid, Bare), Jason Gotay (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Bring It On), and Jeigh Madjus (Here Lies Love) lead a cast that also includes Karl Josef Co, John Rua (Hands on a Hard Body), Alyssa Gomez, Ester Barroso-Guerzon, Adam Kaokept (Aladdin), Paul Heesang Miller (Mamma Mia!), Kristen Oei (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Carla Ogden, Jay Paranada, Don Darryl Rivera (Aladdin), Deanna Taguinaga (West Side Story), and Scott Wantanabe (Pacific Overtures).

Lyrics and music are by Josh Sassanella, who has appeared on Broadway in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Rock of Ages and will soon appear Off-Broadway in the July production of Revolution in the Elbow of Ragnar Agnarsson Furniture Painter.

Richard Amelius will helm this production of Empty City with musical direction by Audra Cramer. The reading will be stage managed by Larry Smiglewski.

The industry reading of Empty City will take place at The Davenport Theatre located on West 45th Street, New York, NY on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 1:30 pm. Attendance for the performance is by invitation only. For additional information, email
