Museum of the Moving Image presents AN EVENING WITH BILL COSBY 2/15

By:

Bill Cosby, one of the most influential and successful performers and creative figures in television history, will be featured in a special program at Museum of the Moving Image on Tuesday, February 15, at 7:00 p.m. The program, An Evening with Bill Cosby, will consist of a conversation with Mr. Cosby about his trailblazing career in television, and will include clips from such groundbreaking network programs as I Spy, The Bill Cosby Show, and The Cosby Show, all for NBC. The Museum program will be introduced by Museum chair Herbert S. Schlosser, whose career at NBC in business and programming coincided with Mr. Cosby's breakthrough and with a number of successful NBC programs, including Julia, The Flip Wilson Show, and Sanford and Son that were among the very first network series to feature African-Americans. Mr. Schlosser was head of the NBC programming department on the West coast in the late 1960s and later became president of the NBC Television Network, and subsequently became president and CEO of the company.

I Spy (1965-1968), which debuted in 1965 during the height of the Civil Rights movement, was the first network dramatic series with an African-American actor in a leading role. It made Cosby one of the most popular actors in television. Cosby then starred as Los Angeles gym teacher Chet Kincaid in The Bill Cosby Show (1969-1971), the first sitcom to provide a genuine portrayal of middle-class life for African-Americans, as well as Asian and Hispanic Americans. The Cosby Show (1984-1992), about the Huxtables, an upper middle-class family living in Brooklyn, was the top-rated show on television for five consecutive years. Mr. Cosby also created the successful series A Different World (1987-1993), a spinoff of The Cosby Show starring Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable, a student at a fictional black college. Bill Cosby has had tremendous success as a comedian, movie actor, author, educator, and musician.

Mr. Schlosser stated "Bill Cosby is one of the most successful creative figures, both onscreen and behind the scenes, in the history of television. He played a vital role in opening television to African-Americans and other minorities. We are fortunate that he will be a guest at the Museum, and we look forward to an unforgettable evening."

Tickets for "An Evening with Bill Cosby" are $30 public / $20 Museum members (Free of Silver Screen level members and above). Advance tickets may be purchased online at http://movingimage.us or by calling 718.777.6800.
