Debra Monk will headline the cast of Paul Weitz' dark comedy
Show People, which will have its world premiere at Second Stage (307 W. 43rd Street) and run from March 16th through April 30th, with opening night set for April 6th.
Joining Monk will be Lawrence Pressman (L.A. premiere of
The Paris Letter, "Judging Amy"), Judy Greer (
Elizabethtown, "Arrested Development") and Ty Burrell (
Burn This); Peter Askin (
Privilege, Hedwig and the Angry Inch) will direct. "Jerry and Marnie are Broadway actors who haven't worked in years," state press notes. "At Jerry's insistence, they take on a risque job for a rich young New York banker.
Weitz, who is best known for the screenplays of
About A Boy, American Pie and
In Good Company, has also penned plays such as
Mango Tea, Roulette and
Privilege, which was seen at Second Stage last season. Both Pressman and Greer will be seen in his next film
American Dreamz.Monk received a Tony Award for her performance in 1993's Redwood Curtain, and was also nominated for her turns in Picnic and Steel Pier. Last on Broadway in Reckless, she has also appeared in Thou Shalt Not, Ah, Wilderness!, the Roundabout revival of Company, Nick & Nora, Prelude to a Kiss and Pump Boys and Dinettes; she also originated the role of Sara Jane Moore in Sondheim's Assassins. An Emmy Award-winner for "NYPD Blue," she has also been seen on screen in Dark Water, Center Stage, The First Wives Club, The Substance of Fire and The Bridges of Madison County; she appeared as a "Little Old Lady Investor" in the recent film version of The Producers and will also be seen in the L.A. premiere of the Kander and Ebb musical Curtains this summer.
Show People's design team will feature Heidi Ettinger (sets),
Jeff Mahshie (costumes), Jeff Croiter (lighting) and Lewis Flinn (sound).
Second Stage is currently presenting
Douglas Carter Beane's Hollywood satire
The Little Dog Laughed through February 26th, and will next stage the New York premiere of Theresa Rebeck's
The Water's Edge--with
Kate Burton and
Tony Goldwyn--from May 23rd through July 9th.
