The College of Performing Arts at The New School will present the first annual (Un)Silent Film Night, in which music ensembles from the College's performing arts schools-the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz, and the School of Drama-will perform live with screenings of landmark silent films. This inaugural program, hosted by Matthew Broderick, marks the debut of the Mannes Theatre Orchestra, which, under the baton of Charles Neidich, will perform a new score by Craig Marks to the Buster Keaton film Sherlock Jr. (1924). The screening/concert will also feature the School of Jazz Improvisation Ensemble, led by Alexis Cuadrado, presenting the premiere of Cuadrado's original score to the 1917 Charlie Chaplin classic The Immigrant.

(Un)Silent Film Night will take place Monday, April 27, at 7pm at the John L. Tishman Auditorium at the University Center (65 5th Ave., New York, New York). Admission is free and open to the public.

Buster Keaton's 1924 silent comedy Sherlock Jr. is widely regarded as one of the funniest silent films ever made. In this grand work of ultra-physical slapstick, Keaton plays a lovelorn film projectionist who dozes off and manages to project himself into a movie and solve a mystery involving his dastardly romantic rival-an act of fantasy that has real-world consequences when finally he leaves the film within the film.

Composer Craig Marks-who apprenticed with Hans Zimmer and has written for classical ensembles, feature films, and network and cable television shows including "Iron Chef America"-brings Sherlock Jr. to new life in his original score, which makes its New York premiere in (Un)Silent Film Night. (The world premiere, by Dallas Chamber Symphony in 2014, garnered considerable acclaim.) The celebrated clarinetist and Mannes School of Music faculty member Charles Neidich will conduct. He comes to the leadership of the new Mannes Theatre Orchestra following appearances, as conductor, with the Avanti chamber Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, the New World Symphony, the San Diego Symphony and the Plovdiv State Philharmonic, in addition to a storied career as an instrumentalist.

As the titular character in thesilent romantic comedy The Immigrant, Charlie Chaplin is accused of theft-and falls in love with a beautiful young woman-on his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. Bassist, bandleader and School of Jazz faculty member Alexis Cuadrado will conduct the New School for Jazz Improvisation Ensemble (comprising faculty, student, and alumni members) in performing his original score, which is sure to be as clever and whimsical as the film. Chaplin, born in London, immigrated to the United States, and Cuadrado, who recently gained American citizenship, is himself a European immigrant, from Spain. His score creates a fabric that absorbs disparate musical identities, which are assimilated through constant improvisation.

Alexis Cuadrado, who was born in Barcelona and is based in Brooklyn, is an award-winning composer, bassist and educator. His compositions possess a unique voice that draws from jazz, new music and often flamenco. NPR Music has said, "Listen to Cuadrado's compositions and you'll find every reason to take him seriously."
