MS. B-HAVED Solo Show to Open at Theatre on the Square

Theatre on the Square is presenting, by arrangement with The Drama Factory, the solo show MS. B-HAVED. It will be coming from Somerset West to Sandton from 15 September, following its debut at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.

The production brings together two forces in South African storytelling - Sue Diepeveen and Natasha Sutherland. Written and performed by Sue Diepeveen (recently nominated as Best Actress at the Naledi Awards and Best Performer at the Vrystaat Kunstefees), the play is directed by Natasha Sutherland, a two-time SAFTA winner and Mbokodo Award recipient for her contributions to South African theatre.

MS. B-Haved offers a look at the extremes expected from educators, parents, and learners in a fast-paced and ever-changing world. It tackles the reaches of cancel culture that have modernly become the norm, blending comedy with an examination of what it truly means to be a teacher, a student, a parent (whether helicopter or 'normal') and a grandparent. Both creators bring solo-show experience to the production. Diepeveen will be remembered for her previous show at Theatre on the Square - So You Want to Be a Trophy Wife?, while Sutherland recently wrapped sold-out national runs of Shirley Valentine. She will also be remembered for her direction of Brutal Legacy at Theatre on the Square, based on Tracy Going's life and book.

Flipping the typical student-focused narrative, the story follows veteran teacher Sally Burkett, who gets suspended from Littleman Junior School after 30 years of teaching. The 'much loved' Ms. B has rocked her small school and town, navigating shifting policies and unattainable expectations while awaiting her fate and unpacking her journey to zoom teaching.

'A must-see for anyone with children or grandchildren entering the schooling system'
