MIDSUMMER / BOWIE ELTON QUEEN To Play Outdoor Performances in Baltimore

Motte & Bailey, prod. has announced MIDSUMMER / BOWIE ELTON QUEEN, a musical adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream featuring the music of David Bowie, Elton John, and Queen.

Adapted and directed by Hannah Fogler, the production will perform outdoors at Elijah's Park on June 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20 at 8 p.m., with an additional performance June 14 at 6 p.m. at Boordy Vineyards.

The production follows previous music-infused Shakespeare adaptations by Fogler, including HAMLET / BLACK PARADE and CAESAR / AMERICANA. The new staging reimagines Shakespeare’s comedy within a matriarchal and queer-centered world, with gender-swapped and non-binary characters woven throughout the production.

“I didn't come out as Queer until I was 30 years old, so I was well into adulthood before I got to be my whole self publicly and privately,” Fogler said in a statement. “MIDSUMMER is not just a celebration of who you are, it also celebrates where you are on the journey to yourself.”

Fogler also stated that the production avoids cross-gender casting, with performers portraying characters aligned with their own gender identities and sexualities. She will appear in the production as Demetrius, reimagined in this version as a bisexual woman.

Cast and Creative Team

The cast includes Vexara, Lance Bankerd, Amy Bell, Greg Bell, Mars Bell, Sophia Bell, Brad Bukowsky, Emily Classen, Omololu Collins, Gabriel Duque, Mars Duque, TJ Flem, Hannah Fogler, Donna Ibale, Libby Kane, Jess Miller, Gaya Mundlye, Jessica Preactor, Gray Sheridan, Aladrian Wetzel, and Caitlin Weaver as Puck.

Live music will be provided by Rockin’ Robin Starveling & the Tweedly Deets.

The Baltimore Peninsula performances mark the first outdoor theatrical production presented there by the company, in partnership with the Baltimore Peninsula Partnership. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for the outdoor staging overlooking the Patapsco River.

Tickets are priced at $30 for general admission and $20 for students, teachers, and artists.

The production includes content warnings for drug use, sexual themes, overt sexuality, partial nudity, and bawdy humor, and is recommended for audiences ages 15 and older.
