What is Magnum?

Magnum Photos is an international photographic cooperative. Owned by its photographer-members since its founding in 1947, this legendary collective has survived for decades by consistently redefining itself. This December, 25 Magnum photographers will gather in Miami to discuss their work and continue shaping the cooperative. While in Miami, the five prominent photographers listed above will also discuss their work during the lecture organized by the Lowe and generously sponsored by the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation and Sagamore, The Art Hotel. The Photographers

Carolyn Drake was born in California. Having studied Media/Culture and History at Brown University, she became interested in the ways that history and reality are purposefully shaped and revised over time. She worked for several multimedia companies and eventually decided to engage with the physical world through photography. She traveled frequently to Central Asia from her base in Istanbul between 2007 and 2013 to work on two photo books: Two Rivers, an exploration of the connections between ecology, culture, and political power; and Wild Pigeon, an amalgam of photographs, drawings, and embroideries made in collaboration with Uyghurs in western China. Carolyn, a recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and numerous other awards, became a Magnum Nominee in 2015.

Thomas Hoepker studied art history and archeology, then worked as a photographer for Münchner Illustrierte and Kristall between 1960 and 1963, reporting from all over the world. A recipient of numerous prestigious prizes, Hoepker specializes in reportage and stylish color features. Magnum began to distribute Hoepker's archive photographs in 1964, and he became a full member of Magnum in 1989. He was president of Magnum Photos from 2003 to 2006. A retrospective exhibition, showing 230 images from fifty years of work, toured Germany and other parts of Europe in 2007.

Susan Meiselas, from Baltimore, MD, received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.A. in visual education from Harvard University. She joined Magnum Photos in 1976. She is the author of three books: Carnival Strippers, Nicaragua, and Pandora's Box and editor of five collections: Learn to See, El Salvador: The Work of 30 Photographers, Chile from Within, Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History and Encounters with the Dani. In 1998 she developed akaKURDISTAN, an innovative website for collective memory and cultural exchange. Her retrospective book and exhibition In History was produced with the International Center for Photography, New York. Meiselas' coverage of human rights violations and the insurrections in Central America was published throughout the world. One-woman shows include: Whitney Museum for American Art; Hasselblad Center, Sweden; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her awards include the Robert Capa Gold Medal, the Hasselblad Foundation Prize, and the Harvard Arts Medal. In 1992 she was made a MacArthur Fellow.

Martin Parr was born in Epsom, Surrey, UK. In 1994 he became a full member of Magnum Photographic Corporation. Among his many prominent academic and other professional photography roles, in 2008 the artist's Parrworld opened at Haus de Kunst, Munich, exhibiting Parr's own collection of objects, postcards, his personal photography collection of both British and international artists, photo books and his own photographs. The exhibition toured Europe for the following two years. Also in 2008, Parr won the Baume et Mercier award in recognition of his professional career and contributions to contemporary photography. He has published more than 80 books of his own work.

Alec Soth, from Minneapolis, MN, is known for his distinctly American tradition of 'on-the-road photography'. His photographs are represented in major public and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Walker Art Center. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial and a career survey at the Jeu de Paume in 2008. Soth has published more than 25 books and in 2008, he started his own publishing company, Little Brown Mushroom. Alec Soth became a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2004 and a full member in 2008.
