Original Hedwig star John Cameron Mitchell dispelled rumors that he may be returning to the show when Michael C. Hall ends his Broadway run on January 4, 2015.

In an article for Out.com, Michael Musto asked if he would ever return to the role on Broadway, but Mitchell explained he is too busy working on a movie. He also added, "when I saw Neil Patrick Harris do the part and climb up all the scenery, I thought, 'This would have to be radically scaled back'...Plus I haven't been onstage in a show in 15 years."

In 1998, Mitchell teamed with composer Stephen Trask to write the Obie-winning musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, in which he also starred as 'Hedwig'. Three years later, Mitchell directed and starred in the movie version and was nominated for a Golden Globe. His creation spawned a cult following across the globe.

Golden Globe and Drama Desk Award winner Michael C. Hall is currently in performances in the title role at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street). The musical, with book by Mitchell and music and lyrics by Trask, directed by Michael Mayer, also stars Tony Award winner Lena Hall as Yitzhak. The production has received rave reviews and is winner of four Tony Awards and won Best Musical Revival by the Tony Awards, the Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

In HEDWIG, "Internationally ignored song stylist" Hedwig Robinson (Michael C. Hall) brings her fourth-wall-smashing rock and roll saga to New York to set the record straight about her life, her loves, and the botched operation that left her with that "angry inch."
