SEPT 10-12
JOSH ROUSE w/ special guest SOPHIE MADELEINE - Friday, September 10 at 7:30 PM; $25
"There are approximately 2,138 white-guy singer-song-writers currently vying for your attention...it's hard to imagine any of them topping themselves six albums into their career - Somewhere, Nic Harcourt is having a glee-induced seizure." - Entertainment Weekly

Josh Rouse started out on Rykodisc where he released five albums and two EPs of literate and engaging guitar pop. During his early years with the label, the singer/songwriter won a devoted audience with his sharply observed lyrics and melodic pop sensibility. A decade after his debut, Rouse picks his favorites from his Rykodisc years for a two-disc anthology that includes his best songs, rare tracks and seven unreleased demos and outtakes. Years and musical styles may separate these songs, but ultimately they are linked through the warmth of Rouse's voice, the conversational ease of his singing and his unfailing melodic gift.

BLACK BOTTOM REVUE: A ROCK n ROLL CABARET feat TAMAR-KALI
w/ special guests THE MAINE ATTRACTION, RAD PONY, DAME CUCHIFRITA, BETTY BLACK, MISS HARVEST MOON & JUDAS PRIESTESS
Fridays, September 3, 10 & 17 at 11:30 PM; $15
Black Bottom Revue draws from Tamar-kali's debut full length album 'Black Bottom' as a musical center piece with support Burlesque and musical performances by some of New York City's best and brightest burgeoning talent.

Kaos Blac hosts this 3 week residency featuring Tamar-kali's 5 piece project featuring weekly guests and treats!

Brooklyn native and resident hardcore-soul queen, Tamar-kali, wields her pen and guitar with equal ferocity. Her hard-rocking brand of outsider art leaps from every track on her 2005 solo EP, Geechee Goddess Hardcore Warrior Soul, enchanting you with its melody, while delivering a swift kick to the gut with its incisive emotional core. Her first full-length release, Black Bottom, packs an even harder punch as audiences are invited to gaze deeper into the recesses of this urban warrior's mind. Her tales of revolution and love may seem contradictory, but the two worlds are inextricably linked by this powerful artist who grasps for the truth in both ideals.

Tamar-kali travels a lonely road of independence that finds many artists of her caliber overworked and underappreciated. Her album title is no mere piece of alliteration, but a reflection of  where she found herself after a particularly disheartening period. "I was in the 'Bottom.' I felt like a shark with no teeth." But after some soul-searching, she came to a pivotal realization, "I don't have to fight for a right to exist - I do exist." From there, the piercing Black Bottom sprang forth and each track drips with the frustration, passion and conviction of an artist on a mission. Her longevity proves that she has what it takes to appeal to hipsters, punks, hip-hop heads and soul/jazz aficionados without compromising her individuality to kowtow to anyone's expectations.

The uninitiaTed May have discovered Tamar-kali when she appeared in James Spooner's award-winning Afro-Punk documentary, with clips of her incendiary performances putting the world on notice to her unsung talent.

Others saw her dynamic energy support artists like Fishbone and OutKast on the group's acclaimed sophomore album, ATLiens. A whole new audience will feel her full force when Black Bottom her first full length release hits the streets this summer.

The cathartic, org*smic emotion Tamar-kali brings with every song leaves her peerless above or underground. One thing to remember with Tamar-kali's sound is, as with any good piece of drama, there's a twist. Nothing is exactly as it appears and by the time you discover the trickery, you're uncontrollably writhing your hips and pumping your fists in the air. As she says in the pulsating "Warrior Bones," "These warrior bones ache for revolution/but the people ain't ready." How can anyone be ready for the aural assault Tamar-kali brings? For warriors and lovers alike, the thrill of the unexpected makes her music all the more necessary.

JOHNNYSWIM w/ SPECIAL GUEST MAYA AZUCENA- Saturday, September 11 at 7:00 PM; $14
"JohnnySwim crafts gripping melodies...the songs transfix" - PopMatters
"...the two come off seamless and natural" - The Tennessean

After performing at the Nona Hendryx-produced UnFiltered Music Series earlier this year, Johnny Swim and Maya Azucena will reunite for an unforgettable night of music to celebrate the release of JohnnySwim's new EP, 5-8.
JohnnySwim, aka AbneR Ramirez and Amanda Sudano-Ramirez, create a compelling amalgam of soul, folk, pop, and blues that is rooted in the eclectic enclaves of Nashville, Los Angeles, and New York City.  They are the stylistic cousin to Lauryn Hill, John Legend, and Corinne Bailey Rae yet wholly original and distinct from any other artist or band.  5-8 encompasses the evolution of JohnnySwim: from the intimate coffeehouse vibe of their earliest performances in Nashville to the pop luster of their 2008 debut 1-4, to the magnetism of their recent concert appearances that have thrilled audiences everywhere from The Roxy (L.A.) to S.O.B.'s (NYC).

Joining JohnnySwim for this very special evening is Grammy-winner Maya Azucena. Hailed for her "storytelling lyrics and soulful, soaring vocals" by Billboard and "armed with a powerfully compelling voice" according to The Village Voice, Maya Azucena believes that music is a tool for healing and activism and supports humanitarian causes with her voice.  Having shared stages with a number of new and legendary artists like Roberta Flack, John Legend, Gladys Knight and collaborated with Vernon Reid, Stephen Marley, and Greg Tate, Maya Azucena is currently completing her forthcoming album Cry Love, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed acoustic soul project Junkyard Jewel.

MIZ METRO / ERIN BARRA
Saturday, September 11 at 9:00 PM
If there is one word to describe Miz Metro, it's unlimited. Hailing from New York City, Miz Metro grew up playing street ball & scatting in street corner ciphers. Her name was acquired from the homemade door-knocker earrings she dons, made from NYC Metro cards. Her earrings have since become her staple style item, a testament to her unique and quirky personality. Whether she's rocking solo with a looping pedal and midi MPC or with her 8-piece band, The Makebelieves, Miz Metro brings promises of an aural and visual ride.

Miz Metro is a modern music media artist, one that embodies the power today's artist can have in the creation and distribution of their image- as an art form in itself. She has created a unique hybrid style through well-crafted lyrics and an unconventional soulful pop sound. Often compared to Amy Winehouse, Fiona Apple, Lily Allen and Gwen Stefani, she describes her main influences to be "A cross between Etta James, Judy Garland & De La Soul."-----
Erin Barra's sound draws from a diverse range of musical influences that creates a distinctive mix of Pop, Rock and Soul with splashes of Reggae. Heavy on the lyrical content she infuses both substance and consciousness into her songwriting with penetrating skill and a unique instrumental perspective.

Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Erin began her musical training on the piano bench at the tender age of 4. She has composed and performed her own music throughout her adolescence beginning with string quartets and even a fully produced Opera titled 'Illusions' that toured high schools on the West Coast through Utah Opera's education program. She solidified her training and craft with a degree in songwriting from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. While at Berklee she was discovered by legendary songwriter John Oates, of Hall and Oates and together the two penned the song 'Waiting' for Barra's first release in 2007. Over the years, Erin has had the opportunity to write and work with industry notables and Grammy award winning artists, engineers and producers.

After making the move to New York in 2007 Erin recorded her first album, Soul Revolutions and immediately dove into the performance circuit; having appeared on New York stages of SOB's, Solomon's Porch, The Bitter End, The Bowery Poetry Club, Rockwood Music Hall, The Canal Room and The Cutting Room. Her presence is also felt on stages throughout the North-East and Rocky Mountain Regions. Whether she is performing with her band, in trio form, or solo, her performances are simultaneously intimate and electric. Playing a Hohner Melodica as one of the cornerstones of her live set along with an infectious energy, she creates something between a rock show and a storytelling.

Erin channels the modern day wattage of Alicia Keys with the substance of Roberta Flack, inspired largely from a classic range of legendary performers such as Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raiit, Bob Marley, Jill Scott, Michael Jackson and Hall and Oates.  $15
