MAY 1-6

Lori Lieberman

Sunday, May 1 at 7:30 PM; $25

Best known for the hit song, "Killing Me Softly", based on Lieberman's experience at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and recorded originally by Lori for Capitol Records, Lori Lieberman has remained in the spotlight, quietly gleaning the respect of an industry and a devoted base of fans. She has recorded over 14 albums and recently toured Europe with the release of her critically acclaimed CD, Gun Metal Sky.

Throughout the years of ever-changing styles and fads, one thing has remained constant in Lieberman's music-- her honest and heartfelt lyrics, coupled with her haunting, and beautiful melodies, always cutting right through to the heart of the listener.

"Lieberman's songs are miniatures --- portraits of love gained and lost. But if they're drawn from her life, they don't seem autobiographical. They're less about what's seen than what's felt. They shine a little light on lives that never make the headlines. And about ideas that are very familiar and rarely celebrated..." - Jesse Kornbluth, Headbutler.com

Due to popular demand and rave reviews, JACKIE FIVE-OH! has extended its run yet again at Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street) through April 4th. In the all-new JACKIE FIVE-OH!, the blisteringly funny, filter-free Hoffman muses on her own decay at 50, her career of playing ‘bit' parts, her thoughts about being in The Addams Family and an array of other topics running the gamut from Queen Latifah to Kristen Chenoweth. Hoffman also sings five new original songs (written with musical director Bobby Peaco). Hoffman will also continue in her hilarious, scene-stealing performance as Grandma in THE ADDAMS FAMILY into the summer.

Hilton Als in The New Yorker called JACKIE FIVE-OH! "a sensational new show" and added "why doesn't some clever producer wrap Hoffman up in a solo show on Broadway, where she belongs?" David Rooney in The New York Times called JACKIE FIVE-OH! "savagely funny" and said "Ms. Hoffman's acid-dipped acts are always a ‘gurney' worth taking." Adam Feldman in Time Out wrote, "Like cloves, a little of Jackie goes a long way. But a lot of Jackie, it turns out, can go even further-as she has proven time and again in her hilariously grumpy one-woman shows at Joe's Pub, which have won her a well-deserved cult following. JACKIE FIVE-OH! finds Hoffman in excellent form. Her robust whine gets better with age." David Sheward in Backstage wrote, "the blisteringly funny Hoffman unflinchingly skewers sacred cows such as the Tony Awards and Holocaust movies, flings acid barbs at the Broadway hierarchy, and does painfully accurate imitations of a gallery of showbiz icons."

JACKIE FIVE-OH! is written by Hoffman and Michael Schiralli, and directed by Schiralli. Musical numbers are co-written with Bobby Peaco, who is also the musical director.

Performance Schedule: Monday, February 14 at 7:30 pm; Monday, February 21 at 7:30 pm; Monday, March 14 at 7:30 pm; Monday, March 21 at 7:30 pm and Monday, April 4 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $30. For tickets, visit www.joespub.com or call (212) 967-7555.

ALAN HAMPTON: Industry Showcase

Tuesday, May 3 at 7:30 PM; $12
"Alan Hampton is creating some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. His songs take the listener on a journey through thoughtful lyrics and emotional harmonies. It's the perfect balance that extends where BrIan Wilson left off." - Jason Moran, MacArthur Fellow jazz pianist

"Alan Hampton is a songwriter who makes you reach for platitudes about "good music" - how people don't write adventurous or honest pop songs anymore, how it's all archness and monotony now, how our harmony-starved ears have shrunk....He does that because he's got loads of talent." - Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

Alan Hampton will showcase the live performance of his album the "The Moving Sidewalk" on Tuesday, May 3rd at 7:30 Pm at Joe's Pub for Entertainment Industry Professionals.

Alan Hampton - Vocals, Guitar

Josh Mease- Bass

Bill Campbell-Drums

Ryan Scott - Guitar

Making the leap from sideman to solo artist, Alan Hampton's debut LP The Moving Sidewalk effortlessly showcases his tender, ashy voice shimmering over lush string trios, Dr. Who synthesizers and finger-picked acoustic guitars all performed by many of Brooklyn's finest musicians.

After performing around the world with artists including Gretchen Parlato, Sufjan Stevens, Clare and the Reasons, Robert Glasper and Elizabeth & the Catapult, Hampton announces solo NYC shows and national dates with Parlato to celebrate the release of The Moving Sidewalk. alanhampton.com

HAPPY ENDING MUSIC AND READING SERIES
Reality featuring authors AnDrew Foster Altschul, Emma Straub, Jon-Jon Goulian & musical guest Daniel Knox

Wednesday, May 4 at 7:00 PM; $15

The consistently sold out, Happy Ending Music and Reading Series, chosen by New York Magazine and NY Press as the best reading series in NYC, and singled out by the New York Times Magazine for helping to "Keep downtown alive," features the most interesting storytellers, writers, musicians, raconteurs and personalities, and requires the readers to take one public risk, while the musicians, who perform two short sets with their original, lyric-driven music, are required to play one cover song and try to get the audience to sing along. Called the "most vital authors' series in the city," by Time Out NY, and known for its consistently good taste, Happy Ending has launched careers and proudly, ended none. http://www.amandastern.com

Emma Straub's debut short story collection, Other People We Married, was published in February. Her fiction and essays have been published in The Paris Review Daily, Tin House, Cousin Corinne's Reminder, and many other journals. Her first novel, Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures, is forthcoming from Riverhead Books. She sells books at BookCourt, one of New York City's finest independent bookstores. More information (and brownie recipes) can be found at www.emmastraub.net

Daniel Knox moved to Chicago from Springfield in 1999 to attend film school. Frustrated with classes, he spent most nights sneaking into the Hilton Tower's Grand Ballroom where he taught himself to play their piano. With comparisons being made to songwriters such as Randy Newman, Richard Swift and Antony, Knox - who has already shared stages with Damon Albarn, Rufus Wainwright, and the Handsome Family - is fast living up to the London Evening Standard's proclamation that he's "a name to watch". A rogue at the piano, Knox croons and sneers so that his cast of characters may speak. He recorded Evryman for Himself, mostly in his kitchen, with contributions from David Coulter (Damon Albarn, Nick Cave) and Ralph Carney (the B52's, Tom Waits, The Black Keys).

AVI WISNIA & DENISE REIS: SHOW DE BOLA

Wednesday, May 4 at 9:30 PM; $12 in advance / $15 at the door
"one of New York City's A-List musicians" - Scott Stiffler (The Villager)

"Jazzy singer-songwriter Avi Wisnia has a Ben Folds-y way of weaving stories into his piano-driven songs." - Time Out New York

"Completely refreshing. Startingly clever. Lyrically brilliant." - Alyssa Rushbaum (music critic for SPIN, VIBE, and Rebel Spirit Music)

Acclaimed American singer/songwriter Avi Wisnia presents an eclectic mix of refreshingly original songs and inventive covers, finding inspiration in classic Brazilian bossa nova, acoustic American folk, 1950's west-coast jazz, and contemporary pop. He has been described as Ben Folds meets Norah Jones, if they had a lovechild in Brazil. A wordsmith as well as a composer, Avi's clever lyrics give a knowing nod to his contemporaries, while his smooth vocals and deft piano skills assure you that this is truly something new. In 2010, Avi toured extensively with his debut full-length album, Something New, performing in prestigious venues across the country - from The Kennedy Center in Washington DC to Yoshi's Jazz House in San Francisco to the SxSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. (www.aviwisnia.com)

"Denise Reis interprets songs beautifully, giving color to her singing, making any song soar. Her voice is pitch-perfect and masterful. I would even say, her voice is magic." - Tito Madi (composer)

"Denise Reis is one of the most musical people I've ever met. She is fated for success." - Jô Soares (TV Globo)

"After her debut with "Chá de Hortelã com Caviar", an album which featured Brazilian pop classics, Denise Reis reaches new audiences with "Alfândega", work that reveals her skill as a songwriter. An album with elegance and refinement." - Jornal Estado de Minas

Denise Reis - Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist - has been thrilling audiences in countries all over the world such as Senegal, Venezuela, Portugal, Ukraine, Israel and USA with her innovative and lyrical music. Her latest album, Alfândega, subtly injects world rhythms with a Brazilian sensibility. She consistently surprises her audience with expressive interpretations and arrangements, in addition to her impressive vocal trumpet improvisations.

A chance encounter between Avi Wisnia and Denise Reis at a New York City open mic last year resulted in friendship and collaboration. The two artists discovered musical affinity in the influence of Brazilian music and the desire to craft exciting original songs. After a successful run of shows performing together in Rio De Janeiro in early 2011, Avi and Denise decided to bring their collaboration back to where it all began, New York City, with the pure and simple purpose of sharing the possibilities of music that transcends boundaries and fuses language and culture. Sam Bradley with special guest HOLLY CONLAN
Thursday & Friday, May 5 & 6 at 7:00 PM; $12 in advance / $14 at the door

UK born/ Canadian based songwriter Sam Bradley has announced his first headlining tour of North America this Spring, kicking off April 27 in Ottawa, ON and wrapping June 7 in Philadelphia, PA. Bradley spent the fall on the road in North America solo supporting Brooke Fraser and his sophomore EP, Zuni, released in November. The upcoming tour will feature Bradley with his bandmates. A mix of rock, folk, soul and blues, Bradley worked with producer Gavin Brown (Metric/Billy Talent) on the bulk of the EP, recording in Vancouver, BC and Toronto, ON. Throughout Bradley shows a dynamic range and knack for writing unforgettable songs.

Bradley was born in London and educated everywhere from Hong Kong to Nashville. He left school at sixteen and the idea of being a singer, songwriter and artist was born. Part of his inspiration to make music his full-time passion came from observing close friend Marcus Foster at work, and another part came from performing with his mother, Canadian folk musician Lee Lindsey. He started by recording music at home and performing at open mic nights but in 2008, Bradley's anonymity was quickly revoked. His song "Too Far Gone" was included in the first Twilight film as a gentle compliment to the movie's dinner scene. Co-written by the film's lead actor Robert Pattinson, the track made its way onto the film's soundtrack via Pattinson's version entitled "Never Think." It provided the jumping off point to begin production on Sam's first formal release.

Los Angeles native Holly Conlan has carved out a distinct niche in Hollywood's expansive music community. Her musical journey from a child pawing her father's grand piano, to classical composition student, to surefooted indie-pop artist has led to the sort of burgeoning career that few independent artists enjoy. A 2008 release of the Bird EP saw Holly's first national exposure, with the languid piano and soaring cellos of "Winter" and the upbeat smirk of "OK" appearing in hit shows like One Tree Hill, 90210, Drop Dead Diva, Ghost Whisperer, The Ex List, and Privileged. That Summer, "You Are Goodbye" was awarded the coveted iTunes Single of the Week spot-- its heartbreaking lyric and haunting production garnering a slew of new fans. Soon the film world took notice, and Conlan was offered a spot on the soundtrack of Love and Other Impossible Pursuits starring Natalie Portman. Radio play followed in a nod from KCRW (Top Tune - "OK") and her addition to their 2009 pledge-drive giveaway package. With the support of LA's famed Hotel Cafe, Holly has been lucky to share the stage with a number of notable performers including Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, Katy Perry, and Butch Walker. As part of 2008's Hotel Cafe Tour, she traded sets with the likes of Ingrid Michaelson, Meiko, and Erin McCarley. Plus, her addition of "I'll be Home for Christmas" to their holiday compilation, Winter Songs, rounded out the Sony/Epic release. 2009 saw the independent release of her newest LP, Fascinator. A culmination of more than a year's work, the thirteen song offering retains the piano driven spirit of the Bird EP but delves deeper into instrumentation and arrangement, with lyrics that hypnotize.

MILTON

Thursday, May 5 at 9:30 PM; $17

Milton, the modern-day troubadour with the distinctive voice and one-name moniker, is the leader of a lively, rootsy collective known for their soul-stirring live shows. Meet Milton and you will meet a tall, bookish optimist who will tell you about the "heavy" New Group that he heard in a club last night and the old folk recording he listened to this morning with equal enthusiasm. The folksinger has developed a grassroots following for the warmth and spontaneity of his live shows, with a playlist that includes traditional folk, blues and country songs with old time harmonies. Earning comparisons to many of his heroes-Van Morrison, Nick Lowe, The Band-singer-songwriter Milton has distinguished himself with his unique voice and lyrics, a compelling mix of grit and grammar.

TOH KAY (of Streetlight Manifesto)

Thursday & Friday, May 5 & 6 at 11:30 PM; $12
Toh Kay (Tomas Kalnoky) is the lead singer/guitarist and songwriter of the bands Streetlight Manifesto and Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. He also held this position in the famed 3rd-wave ska band Catch 22, but left the band after making only one album (their debut, entitled Keasbey Nights) to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia.

His first foray into the music world began with the punk band Gimp, with whom he released one cassette, Smiles for Macavity, before moving onto Catch 22. It was in Gimp that he first wrote the song "Supernothing" which later appeared on the Catch 22 demo Rules of the Game and the album Keasbey Nights. However the original version is a much slower acoustic song, which features Tomas' brother Achilles on violin (Achilles would later appear on the Bandits EP A Call to Arms).

Kalnoky has a unique singing voice, which slightly changed during the period between his participation in Catch 22 (throaty and raspy) and Streetlight Manifesto (slightly nasal). In both of these bands, he uses a unique guitar technique that is an innovative take on the ska strumming method. Kalnoky uses the classic upstroke technique, but executes it in a fashion so rapid that it is highly removed from the more traditional sound of first-wave and two-tone ska.

SOULTANA

Friday, May 6 at 9:30 PM; $15

Soultana, a popular rapper from Rabat, is a pioneer of Morocco's booming hip-hop scene. She received the prestigious Key Award from the Mawazine Festival in 2008 as a member of Morocco's first female rap group, Tigresse Flow, and since then has carved out a solo career performing regularly at some of the country's top festivals. She is particularly known for rapping about women's issues and the challenges faced by her generation. This concert is her New York debut.
