SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ With the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art scheduled for closure until 2016, JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square has partnered with refusalon to create a captivating art experience for guests and the local community. The luxury hotel near Union Square San Francisco has transformed its first floor into a gallery showcasing the work of 15 artists from around the world.

Visitors will find a distinctive collection of art in a kaleidoscope of mediums. Works on display at the San Francisco luxury hotel range from a gravity-defying sculpture of intertwined lovers by one of the world's preeminent glass sculptors, Pino Signoretto, who has collaborated with Salvador Dali, Jeff Koons and other art luminaries, to an ethereal seaweed installation by recent San Francisco Art Institute graduate, Dimitra Skandali.

ART UNITES CULTURES

Gallerist Shmulik Krampf views art as a way to bring people together. Israeli artist Uri Tzaig worked closely with 150 Bedouin women weavers in the Negev Desert to create a powerful presentation featuring their traditional rugs juxtaposed with his own desert-inspired rust prints on paper. The collaboration viewable at the San Francisco hotel near Union Square unites cultures in the creation of art and empowers the Muslin women to achieve economic independence through their trade.

Tzaig's goal is to help preserve the desert culture. He says, "the El-Saraa tribe has been crafting these rugs since the BC era. I want to expand their markets so the women can use the profits toward education and other items essential to the healthy continuation of their culture."

ARCHITECTURE IS AN IMPOSITION ART

The JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square, which first opened its doors as The Portman Hotel in 1987, was designed by architect John Portman. According to Portman, "Architecture is an imposition art. It sits out on the sidewalk. We're imposing it on everyone. So practitioners have to be sensitive that buildings are not just structures, but elements within the living human ecology of cities."
